Who knows about windows (Double Glazing)?

I'm surprised to see aluminium spacer bars though. Do you get any cold bridging through them? We use a warm edge spacer which I think is made from some sort of plastic.

Those aluminum spacers, might actually be silver finish warm edge spacer, which is made from a dense foam, which I have in mine.

They are a foam filled bar or pressed round some insulative material.

I've had them now 4 years and no problems with cold bridging, the only issue we have is no extractor in the bathroom and condensation from the shower builds up and sits on the bottom unless you open the window, suppose it wouldn't matter a bean if they were plastic.

We use this company at work quite a bit so I paid some what reduced price for these and had to hire the fitters my self, unfortunately they have changed their process now where when I bought mine all the timber was sourced from Scandinavia and sorted, anything with knots went to the line that were to be painted, the knots drilled out, plugged and filled and the knot free went to these type. Now they are all knot free but pine from Eastern Europe and finger jointed in 2 - 3 ft lengths, they don't do one piece anymore.

They need a clean and a coat of oil every other year and the doors get bashed a bit by the kids but you cam sand them and re oil

Very nice looking windows those. Question about the exterior - does everyone go for white these days? I'd like wood on the outside too, but would exterior wood have to be wood effect only, i.e. wood-a-like composite / upvc (don't know the difference)?

White just goes with the rest of the estate, fake grain looks rubbish and most new builds now are grey ral 7015 which is a popular architects choice.

Just done a bit of digging and it seems that Spectus Elite 70 frames that I fit can take a 44mm unit with the use of a slim bead. Good to know that I can upgrade my units in my house in the future. Would be pointless at the moment as all the heat is going straight out through the uninsulated brick walls and some of the ceiling where the rafters create part of the ceiling .

Main reason I'm interested is due to the noise blocking if they really do make a difference. We have changed a few single glazed windows or them really thin double glazed units in the past and customers have been really impressed with the noise reduction, so these would make even more of an impact.

The spectus frames are supposed to be good for insulation as they have 5 chambers in the profile. A lot of cheaper profiles only have 3 chambers.

Mark: Rehau windows have similar thing with Thermo Window Profile, which you can also slide a moulded foam material into the profile.

Also look at Olsen windows, they do the Aluminium & Timber / Elite 92 Alu frames, takes a 44mm triple glazing unit.

And there a few German window makers now offering a 48mm Triple glazed unit.

Thanks, I'll have a look into these. I'm quite fond of these Spectus frames though, they look really nice compared to a lot I have used in the past. We also get a 52.5% trade discount on them .

I'm just starting on getting quotes from local suppliers. I've got the first one coming round on Saturday to give me a quote. They use stuff from a firm called Deceuninck who have their UK factory in the next town over.

Any top tips for dealing with them?

The salesmen came to measure on Saturday. He offered class A and C rated windows but said that class A wouldn't make a huge difference in my case as the windows are too small to achieve the rating in reality.

I'm looking at going for Class C Pilkington K glass (4mm on outside and 6mm inside for sound proofing). Fingers crossed it won't be too pricey.

Now to get some other quotes.

We are looking into getting new windows fitted. Before I start looking at firms can anyone give me a rough figure for 10 windows (no doors). I know it wont be exact due to sizes/frames etc but it will give me an idea of what I'll be paying out.

£125 - 175 sq m for plastic dbl glazed
£700 - 1,000 per door

Circa
Don't quote me on it
Someone will be able to do it for 12p sq m including the washing up

I've been offered triple glazing by one company. It's pretty competitively priced and fully guaranteed for 10 years (including moving parts) so unless the independent builder comes back ridiculously cheap it looks like it could be the best option for me.

I just got price for four Rehau framed windows fitted , £1250, Double not triple but its the 60mm(?) ones not the cheaper type, gonna attempt to negotiate another three as they are coming to fit four anyway ;-)

you may want to install triple glazed, if you live near busy motor way where noise is main concern. otherwise i would recommend 28mm double glazed unit
