Who knows their highway code?

If I was to encounter this situation on a lesson with a learner, my advice would be:

If on your driving test, wait at the red sign, and speak up to the examiner that you have made the decision to wait based upon the awkward location of the sign. In a real life situation, use common sense. If the road is clear and it is safe to go, then go. It is clear the "wait here" sign is only there to prevent boneheaded drivers from blocking the junction. I would advise that taking some extra caution would be useful, as pedestrians might be seeing the red light, and assuming they don't need to look to cross the road.

For what it's worth, as an instructor, if I were first in the queue in a normal, everyday driving situation and wanted to turn left, if it was safe I would go. If I had my roof box with my name on top of the car, and there was a traffic policeman in a car directly behind, I would probably wait...
