Who makes the best donuts?

Never had Krispy Kreme as I can't justify spending £15 on a box of sugar. :/

Especially when I can get 10 raspberry jam doughnuts from Tesco for a quid. :3

Well they are a treat - an amazing treat. I have them probably about twice per year, when I go down to London or Trafford Centre in Manchester which I think is the closest one to me.

In Salisbury, there is Reeve the Baker, they make fabulous jam doughnuts covered with sugar.

Thay have a dozen branches through Wiltshire Hampshire & Dorset, I alway buy a dozen or so doughnuts if I'm near one of their shops.

And their Lardy cake isn't too bad either.

The best donut I ever had was in Weston when I was about 8 years old. Haven't had one as nice since then. It was crispy on the outside and warm and soft in the middle. Couldn't be much better.

There's a local bakery near me that does one that comes close, but it's a hit and miss. Sometimes they are perfect, other times they are like tennis balls.

I'm tempted to hop on a bus tomorrow and go into the centre to get a box of Krispy Kreme donuts after seeing those pictures. They look awesome.

What are those fried doughy things you get in Spain etc? Usually long and thin, ridged, covered in sugar?

EDIT: Have looked them up on internet and found them on Wiki. They're called Churros.

Make your own.

There are different methods to a doughnut and you can have it dense like a cake or fluffier.

Is this actually possible and to get them to a decent cooked consitency without a commercial deep fryer?

Also tesco sell Krispy Kreme or at least all the ones near me do, special stand near the entrances.

Commercial deep fryers are for larger batches, aren't they?

Not much to it, just hot oil and fry both sides.

Plenty of doughnut recipes online too. Such as this one: -

You use active dry/wet yeast for lighter doughnuts like a glazed one and a cake like recipe for denser doughnuts.

Yep, can make them at home. If I made them smaller I could have done them in the deep fryer to totally control temp.

I don't see potato as a veg, it's more a starch.
You can't go wrong with certain "sweet" veg in puddings, carrot cake and beetroot chocolate cake.

Ate three sainsbury jam donuts today at lunch mmmm

not so good for the wasteline but it has gone to pot anyway atm. As it is all I will eat today anyway can probably get away with it..

Really difficult to decide between freshly cooked donuts at the seaside with a ludicrous amount of sugar sprinkled on them or Krispy Kremes :( both just too good
