Who owns an iPod alternative?

I've actually heard the sound quality on the iPhone 4 at least is actually very good (technically).

My gf has an iPhone4 and quite simply when compared to my Cowon J3 it was a joke. The Cowon's sound quality is God-Like, yes it isn't cheap but if you're serious about music it's an audiophiles wet dream

So it's not bad then, it's just not as good as something else which is a fairly expensive standalone player.

I've had my old 30gb Ipod for a good few years now, I like it.

I like it even more because it works on Linux and I can actually transfer songs from Ipod to Laptop, ya hear that Itunes?!

;)

Like i said it's not terrible but if you ever hear the Cowon then you can never really be happy with the iPod again.

EDIT!!!!

Scratch that!!!

My 32Gb Cowon J3 was £200 and you can expand the memory with SD cards

The iPod 32Gb is about £200 as well! You'd be insane not to choose the Cowon over the ipod!

I'm currently using a Sony NWZ-X1060 32GB OLED and the sound quality is excellent, so much better than an iPod (which I've had before). Hopefully Sony will released a new mp3/media player very soon.

How does it handle podcast subscriptions?
What about audiobooks?
The interface looks alright but it isn't as slick as the iOS.
There doesn't seem to be a way to jump down a list of artists, you have to scroll.
I'm going to guess Cowon's Widgets are next to useless compared to the App Store.

Yes if you're happy to just put your music on there and listen those things may be of little concern, but they shouldn't be disregarded just because a Cowon has better sound quality.

As you can see from this thread, what someone wants from their personal music/media player can differ greatly.

One of the biggest advantages with Apple is you can go into a store and try it out. Where can I go to a store and try out a Cowon or any other player. Yes it might not mean it is what you must have but at least I know how it works and behaves without having to buy one.

Nice earphones. I have the se535's with custom moulds have tried them how do they compare to those if so? Does the amp make a significant difference? I've got all my music uncompressed noticed a difference from the standard compression rate of 192kps but im sure there is much more to be heard though does it bring a superior amount of detail?

Typical iPod fan, actual sound quality is last on the list! :p

A £30 Sansa Clip+ destroys the iPod for SQ.

This looks interesting ... Like most people I have dropbox on my phone and although the quality is ok - it's really poor compared to previous players like the iriver / cowan

Where do I find out on how to do this portable DAC/DAP gig ?

Head-Fi.org - Headphone forums and reviews for audiophiles :D

@joeyjojo @Shamrock @moon man

Damn the lot of you for introducing me to Head-Fi

Tell me about it. I just dropped another £160 on a valve amp (but it does sound immense) :D

iPods always come out very well in sound quality reviews. So a very odd statement.

The thing is, sound quality can be pretty subjective.

I own both the Sandisk Sansa Clip + and an iPod Touch 2nd gen, and I can tell the difference with some of the tracks on the latest Moderat album encoded at 320K... when hooked up to a half decent soundsystem...

To me the Sandisk has better dynamics, particularly with the bass, but there's not much in it really...

I use my iPod far more often, as I'm not at a computer very often now, and being able to download extra music on to my iPod over wifi is now how I obtain most of my music... Having to hook up a USB cable all the time to the Sandisk just seems like too much hassle now. ;)

I don't like itunes, I don't want to pay over the odds, I don't like the interface nor control method. For the vary rare occasions I actually use a portable music player, I like the sound quality of my device, it's tiny, weighs nothing, and the battery lasts for ages.
