Who owns an iPod alternative?

I don't think I've ever owned a standalone mp3 player as I've just used my mobile phone for music on the move ever since you could get 1gb+ memory cards at a reasonable price (e.g. Nokia 6230 or maybe Sony Ericsson K750i sort of time at the latest). The quality probably isn't as good as a standalone player but since most of the time I'm either not listening through top quality headphones and/or I'm going to be somewhere that the external environment intrudes on my listening I can't say that I notice the difference much.
 
attrac and itunes was never my thing, bulky software and expensive players. brought my gf a sony once coz it said mp3 player and what a pain that was. ive always put it on usb stick played on stereo in car or now bluetooth from phone, which i use out and about as well connected to car playing music and phone calls with google sat nav so really is a god send just to have desire s and everthing in 1 with no silly converting software
 
I've got:

-A portable mp3-cd player that I imported from the US about 10 years ago
-A really clunky button operated 20GB mp3 player (from the days when even an 8GB iPod was pretty expensive)
-Motorola E398, Sony Ericsson W300i, Samsung G600, Nokia 6800, HTC Desire HD phones that play mp3s (irony is the E398 which is about 7 years old now probably has the best sound output).

Oh and I also have a 30GB iPod (wife's old one that she ditched after getting a Nano) but I never use it other than to play stuff that's already on it via a docking station, as I don't like iTunes.

To be fair I do like the iPod interface though, streets ahead my mickey mouse 20GB player.
 
Tried a Creative Zen for a couple of weeks and didn't get along with it, probably more-so because I'd been using an iPod Classic 80GB for a year before hand.

Also have an iPhone which I've put some music on but never actually listen to music on because the battery life is stupid. There are a couple of artists on there as backup incase my iPod somehow runs out of battery which is very rare because I keep a keen eye on it.

Wouldn't get even a tiny part of my music library on my phone which is why I carry both my iPhone and iPod.

Didn't buy the phone new though because I think they are over-priced.

Bought an iRiver Hp-120 back in 2003 loved it, sound quality, battery life and file compatibility were brilliant. Only replaced it because after many many years of use the battery died.

Now own a Cowon D2, use the DAB radio all the time, great quality and battery life.


Never had any desire to ever own an ipob nor will I ever.
 
There used to be a time when the competition was technically superior, and I had a Creative touch thing and an iRiver. Since they put gapless playback on the iPods, this is no longer the case - the iPods are brilliant now, I have the latest iPod Nano. I would potentially use my phone which is capable of it, but it is no good for running and Android have not implemented gapless playback (:mad:, though I may have found a 3rd party app that does). It is also good to not have to drain the battery on my phone and have a music device that will play music for as long as you could need.
 
I have a Meizu M6. It's taken much abuse and still works fine, although the touch buttons go a bit mad if I have it in my pocket facing my leg.

I could never bring myself to own an iPod due to iTunes and the apparently poor reliability (LOADS of faulty ones for sale on the bay).
 
I've been using a 32GB Cowon J3 for the past year along with the smaller Sansa Clip+.

Both amazing PMPs.
 
Creative Zen X-Fi 16GB. 1000 songs loaded so far, Max and Paddy Series and Band Of Brothers whole series and it's only used less than 4GB. Fantastic little player.
 
iRiver H120. Had it since 2004 and used it daily for about 4 years. I use it fairly infrequenly now, but I seriously doubt any iPod would have lasted this long.

I own a Sandisk Sansa Clip + and a multitude of iPod's,

The Sandisk Sansa Clip + actually sounds good, while the iPod is far more suited for podcats and apps and such, I find the sound quality lets it down, an optical output is needed IMO... I guess I like to have the best (or worst?) of both worlds....
 
Got an iPod touch on Apple Campus promotion.
Love it! Use it mostly for movies&music on the trip, trains(I got many movies via the iFunia media converter from my DVD disk :D), of course emails around here and there, and surfing the internet...etc.
 
16gb iphone 3gs is not enough for my 90Gb music library so i use a 160gb ipod classic, want to switch to a sony X player with the awesome SQ but max capacity is 32gb :(.
 
the x series is over rated anyway. I dont understand why people need to keep their entire collection on their portable players either. Mines 300gb - good luck finding a player that size.

Anyway, dont bother with the x players. you pay extra for built in noise cancelling which you then cant use if you upgrade the ear phones. The stock earphones aren't bad, but they are brilliant either (x1050 owner)

I remember having a hombrew mp3 player in my car around 10 years ago, a 30gb Hdd was one of the largest available at the time. I eventually found that having 5000 or so songs to choose form was too much... I would spend more time choosing songs rather than listening to them!

Now I tend to mostly listen to podcasts and mixes, having fewer things to choose from is easier on the brain it seems. :)

Do you actually need every song you have on there at once? How often do you listen to more than say 20gb of it? My mp3 collection is somewhat larger than 32gb but I don't need or want the potential to listen to every song all the time.

Not a single thing wrong with iTunes managing my music.

I want all my music on my iPod, I want to update a few playlists here and there. Done

It's so much better than drag and drop or doing it all manually
