Who owns an iPod alternative?

Have a clip+, works well, albeit only holding a 5th of my music (8gb).

Saying that, I don't often listen to music on my mp3 player, when I'm away from my computer which has all my music on it, I find myself thinking more, which music interrupts. Same for using my phone for email/internet actually, I don't want to stay connected all the time.

I was initially scared off of the whole ecosystem by the mountains of DRM on all the files as I didn't want to get locked into an ecosystem like that after my nano.

You've wrote that as though you believe the only music you can play on an iPod is what you buy off iTunes.

For those who still use an iPod but hate iTunes, try Yamipod.

:)

The point people are making is that it's still a piece of software for transfer - rather like Windows Explorer.

All those praising iTunes and saying people dislike it because they can't use it properly. Can you tell me how I'd sync my iPhone/iPod with iTunes on a fresh install of Win 7 which I would have to do lets say if (a) I got a virus on my PC or (b) if my PC just died for one reason or (c) for a number of other reasons. But yeah, how would I sync my iPhone/iPod to iTunes without it completely wiping my iPhone/iPod clean?

I can answer that without having the software on my PC.
YOU TURN OFF SYNC AND DO YOUR OWN FILE MANAGEMENT.
Dead easy.
Anybody who clicks on 'Let iTunes manage your music files' want their brains removing.

I have an archos 605, I love the challenge of hacking and modding devices, I think that every device in this house that can be pwned has been pwned. Even my tv box is now acting as a nas :D.
I don't use it much, it can cope with h264 which is nice and the screen is amazing quality. Even though it can only go up to 720 * 480, the colours are stunning.

I use both my Samsung Galaxy S 2 and my Cowon S9 - the GS2 for when I don't want to carry an extra device and the S9 for the superior audio quality. The audio on the GS2 is decent enough though - probably because it supports flac and my Shure SE410 headphones make almost any player sound good :)

I had an iphone 3g for a year and a half but ended up taking my Cowon S9 (and before that a Cowon D2) everywhere because the 3g just wasn't good enough.

It's good to see a few other Cowon users here, even if there aren't very many!

Quite happy with my 80gb ipod classic. Does what I need and iTunes makes life nice and simple. Would use my SGS but quite frankly the audio quality on it is terrible and it can't carry as many songs. Yes I do use all 80gb as well, I have quite a diverse taste in music and as such I need the space. I would be quite willing to try other devices but have yet to find one that meets my needs and is actually better than the good ole classic.

Another Sansa Clip+ here. 4gb version with an 8gb sd card. cost me 38 pound in all. Using rockbox and seinheisser cx500's.

Another user here.

Seriously they are so good and cheap, I got mine on ebay for £25 and it holds its charge really well.

Can't go wrong with it.

Back to the question, ipods are quite expensive

1st gen Nano's were about £80. the latest generation are £131.

I had a Creative Zen, it was terrible. I persevered for a while but it was just rubbish at everything.

I replaced it with an iPhone as I was very impressed with the iPod interface, ability to easily sync music and podcasts.

I also have an 8GB Sansa Clip+.

This kind of.

Creative Zen V+ - horrible and buggy.
Sansa Clip 4GB - one of the first ones that kept freezing, sent it back

Now have an old Gogear SA2825 missing the display. Still perfectly useable and sound quality is great.

Out of curiosity what is considered the best SQ nowadays - always thought it was Sony/Cowon/iRiver (though I know iRiver isnt as good as it once was). Considering something for the gym....

ps3ud0

I think it has become cool to hate iTunes because it is cool to hate Apple.

Just wanted to pick up on this statement. I would think iTunes was fine if it was just a store but the fact that it is the only way of putting music on iPods is rather annoying. It is quite a slow program in general and the way it isn't treated as a data storage but because if you want to put any new music on it then any music that isn't on your computer at the time is erased. It is an interface that replaces what I think is a superior and simplified system (Drag and drop).

I have an iphone alternative.

My iphone.

Cowon s9
Clip+
And a sort of working 1st gen nano, it likes to lock up and i cba to flash it.

The cowon is great. A bit cold but for sq i love it, my iem's will pick up on a poor player or music encode.

I have been tempted to grab an ipod and use an lod to a suitable usb dac/amp combo, that is meant to produce some very nice resulst, which is where the cowons tend to lack, very few have a line out dock.
