Tried searching but '.mac' causes problems. Who uses it, and what does it actually do? Can't google for the same reasons I can't search here. Seems interesting from what I can read.

Cheers

Cheers guys. Was hoping for some first hand experience. Is it one of those things that normal people don't use?

I use it, but not enough :(

I'll prob start using it more when i'm not so busy with uni work!

it's handy to use as a dropbox for work, image, etc, its easier than using ftp, because you can just drag things into your iDisk. But you can find cheaper hosting.

I use it abit - for a simple website/blogsite with iWeb, the gallery features from iPhoto and the iDisk, easily store and write files on there, especially when I've got some coursework and I forgot my USB stick (I know I can email myself but I can also use my iDisk if it is larger than 10MB (limited by hotmail)

I also use the .mac email, more personal stuff.

One thing I like about .Mac is the 10GB space which I can allocated however amount for website/photos or just use it purely for emails.

It's okay for simple stuff + integrated with the OS for £50 per year. I'll start learning more HTML and the likes and look for a better webhost before bringing my website on there instead of the .Mac (with my domain) - it is somewhat slower than the average site.

Can you hotlink to files on your .mac server? I can't do that with my current hosting.

How easy is it to point your domain at that space too?

Cheers

I never tried hotlinking files before, I might give it a go with a .jpeg later tonight :)

As for "how easy" to point domain to .Mac, it depends on your domain tools, I was with some crappy site and it didn't support DNS(?), so I had to transfer over to Reg123 and do it from there, took 48hours for the domain to be refreshed, basically changed my domain's pointing to .mac's and through iWeb, you follow the steps and you'll be fine - almost fool proof (I'm kinda a fool in terms of domain/DNS/forwarding websites and using them tools.

Edit: Just tried, looks like I can't hotlink my .jpeg from my iDisk, so no... but I've set it so any joe public can download files off there, so it's a good place to put big big files up and have people grabbing off there, e.g. photos from a social night out :)

Would appreciate you giving the hotlinking a go :)

I'm with 123reg at the moment, and it was fairly easy to point it at my freehostia space. They're a bit stingy with max file sizes and the like, so if .mac is more charitable I might shift over, or at least try the trial.

I use it for synching bookmarks, mail accounts and for the email address. Bit expensive for £60.

Don't use the other stuff, I have separate internet hosting.

.Mac is great for the iDisk like a internet thumb drive you cannot forget to bring with you. Back to my mac gives you visual or file access to your computer over the internet simply and easily, very nice if you want to get files you left behind. and also Sync, which copies all your settings, password every thing online securely then the you can sync it to other computers, i.e. merge the data or use it as a backup.

I use it quite a lot.

  • Work Documents
  • Personal Documents
  • Photo Backup
  • Web Hosting
  • General Rubbish

Mainly for things I think I might need at any time.
