who was hunting for a 2.5T Titanium X mondeo?

The 2.5T in the Mondeo is detuned so that its emission would put it into a lower, more affordable tax band, especially for businesses. The engine can easily produce more power with a simple remap.

As for comparing its performance to a 2L TDi A1, that's lolworthy given the Mondeo is a much bigger/heavier car and has a higher top speed. Might as well compare it to a 1.6L Lotus Elise...

But I do agree, the standard Titanium X trim without the built-in Nav doesn't look great. Titanium X sport on the other hand... Nonetheless, great cars to drive.

Yeah sure, have you looked at the specs on that ford?

2.5T 5 cylinder petrol making 217bhp and it does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds.

217bhp from a 2.5l turbo seems pretty crap when audi get over 340 with their 2.5l engine?

Sorry, can you buy a TT RS for six grand?

It's obvious that they won't put a high state of tune on a Mondeo with non ST/RS badging. Anyway Ford sold a 2.5T with 305ps and 345ps, so it was done, on cars where that state of tune actually makes sense and where there's a demand for it.

Sorry if this offends Ford lovers but 217BHP from a 2.5T?

That's the kind of thing that drives people to diesel.

It's there to stop it costing £400+ a year to tax and putting people off that way.

The idea is to take it to Mountune if you want more power and your warranty intact. Then you can continue to pay £280 and yet drive around with 285bhp.

To be fair, there's a lot of difference between this engine and how it is in the RS, it might be the same engine but the RS version has nearly different everything internally.

I don't get the hate for this car, it's a decently paced Mondeo which Ford knew wasn't really in need of the ST badge so they didn't give it one. If you want more pace, get something else or map this.

Thanks - I think I'll perhaps hold out for an estate, although good to see what's on the market.

Epic, thanks muchly. I'm hoping to be buying over Christmas, will update if I go see one.

But it has about as much sex appeal as a potato..

I was drunk on a Friday night and it drove past me I would stick my hand out hoping for a taxi home.

Cluestick: Not everyone puts 'sex appeal' at the top of the list when buying a car. But each to their own.

Yes I know that, I was just getting at the 'power is crap for the engine size point' with blackhawk comparing a 2.5 engine in a medium family hatchback with a 2.5 engine in a sports car.

Tell us more about how you don't understand peak power.

My car with only 140bhp will do 0-60 in 7.9 seconds with same torque figures. Wow a whole .4s difference.

But we aren't talking about audi a1's are we.

What would be the marketing rationale behind a 340 Bhpl Mondeo Titanium?

I have the 2.5t Estate, mapped to 260ish bhp and it's great fun for a sensible reasonably priced family size car. Driving it is always a pleasure, the economy is pretty poor, but then I cannot resist using all of the accelerator. It has tons of torque over a very wide range.

With the remap it's performance is around the same as the Focus ST (stock), maybe a tiny bit quicker.

Edit: Also I can't see any point trying to put more power in the engine than 260, it's already always wanting to wheel spin in second gear. For more power youd need rear wheel drive.

This. It's hilarious how people just don't understand peak figures.

Anyone who suggests a 2.5T Mondeo isn't going to be a quick car is just deluded. Unless your other car is a 575 Marenello you aren't going to be constantly sat there saying 'god, if I had more power I could have attempted an overtake then'

So it's not that much quicker 0-60 but it'll be a massive improvement past 60mph into treble figures. And it's probably twice as heavy.

Do you still buy cars based on Top Trumps style data?

I like it, with a tune 280odd hp and a total sleeper!

But I wouldn't buy one ever since the gear linkage (under the gear stick) failed on my Focus and taking it apart to fix it made me realise just how great a shortcut on cost and design they made compared with the likes of VW.
Makes you wonder where else they take such shortcuts.

I'm wondering (a) what the insurance hike is likely to be if I chipped one and (b) would Ford still be happy servicing it?

What's most likely to break on a 2.5T once you've oomphed it a bit? Gearbox?
