Who with a 8800 series is getting R600?

Yeah,

Its no secret...People like me keep technology moving.

We don't hang around like vultures looking for scraps...

We soar like eagles! :D

Whats your point...again?

Point being you will be upgrading to another single slot card for little gain, selling a top of the range card at a loss (whichever way you want to look at it) which when paired with the same card will outperform your new one. You are decieving yourself if you think the r600 will be better than 2x8800gtx's. I aint against anyone upgrading for whatever reason they like but please don't preach that you 'keep technology moving' when all you are doing is moving from one totr card from one manufacturer to the other. Knowing when an upgrade is worthwhile is what pushes the market forward as each manufacturer would be looking for a significant breakthrough rather than attempting to gain the 'crown' by a few fps/mhz, which going by past 'gpu wars' has been the case, only the major revisons have been worth it imo.

But don't let me put you off m8, I'll happily pay less for a setup that outperforms the most recent kit - vulture or not :p .

Very rarely imo does budget kit ever completely outperform totr stuff - yes it certainly equals it (therefore saving the budgeter ££££) but wouldnt say it outperforms most of the time

I'd say it does outperform the top of the line stuff nearly all the time... as long as the top of the line stuff is running at stock.

agreed. e.g. its not hard to oc an e6600 way past stock on x6800.
Gpu's are another thing though I don't think an 8800gts (gaming stable not 2min benchmark) could 'outperform' stock gtx. Even with an expensive cooling setup the point that it would be a 'cheaper' option is not valid.

My motto of purchasing goes like this:

CPU's = buy low/mid-range and OC like crazy.

Mobo = Buy mid-range with decent features.

RAM = Buy best you can afford, v important.

GPU = Buy best you can afford, rare nowadays that cheaper ones can be unlocked or soft/hard-modded.

:)

i dont think its really important at all what ram you buy, as long as you buy stuff that's compatible lol.

I'd have to disagree if you're running Intel and maximum performance is your goal... there's a huge difference in the quality of RAM if you're intending to run 1:1 or low divider, and this impacts the overall overclock in a big way.

With AMD I used to get decent value stuff and run a divider as it didn't really matter. :)

i use pc5300 with my e6600+8800gtx. i still score 10k in '06, 59k in '01 and it still slaughters everythign i throw it at. I have never believed ram makes much of a difference. it didnt wqith my opteron pc either:) i have always said there are far better things to spend money on than ram:)

Another vote for buying decent ram. Less compatibility issues, High 1:1 FSB's = more sweet spots. Very impressed with my G SKill HZ.

On Topic. Depending on the IQ (must be >= G80), Performace (>30%), efficiency and price I will be buying the R600. The one thing I do find unaccepable with the G80 is the high idle power draw. I'm hoping the R600 will be better in this respect.

Amazing news, yeah its poss these guys are just gearing up Crysis to make it compatible on the 8800GTX/R600 and Vista, thats by no means an easy task.

I too didnt reckon it could hit 2007, but they have been lately hinting of an announcment soon enough its gotta be the public MP test, should keep gamers happy for a few months before release ;)

Holy thread revival batman  , My GTS has been sold, I'm using an X550 while I wait for the HD2900XT :D .
wouldnt it have been easier to just sell the card after you have the 2900 XT? the only reason i see not to is if you cant afford to buy the new card, then sell the old one after it.

Mainly that, but he also wanted to get as much back as possible for his GTS before it depreciated.

But then how can someone go without a video card for gaming for weeks....
As anyone thats looking at paying out big money for these highend cards most be a pretty hardcore gamer...
Unless there only buying them for benchmarking...
