The blind guy want's to thank his lucky stars he wasn't carrying a chair leg - or in America where a quick google will show two deaf people have been killed by police because they didn't hear them
telling them to stop.

or driving a Mini in London and mistaken for a crook and shot 6 times - Then the guy shot for having a hidden gun and he was naked - or black woman in bed shot by mistake.

You just couldn't make it up. - Police and firearms do not mix.

Armed police are required, however I don't think it should be like the USA.

it wont be, there's a hell of a lot more police accountability here.

the ol' usa argument gets rolled out a lot in debates like this, but the usa isn't exactly the only nation on earth that has routinely armed police, like say france, germany, austria, denmark, finland, the netherlands, sweden, northern ireland etc.

the problem the usa has is such a large percentage of their population is armed, and hence the police who are mere mortals (if a bit gung ho) adopt a stance of "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6", which is understandable. i know i'd probably have to cultivate a similar attitude

yep, and whilst i won't for one second discount the fact that its entirely possible to bludgeon someone to death with a baton, one would assume the line of "i should stop now, he's going to die" is somewhat easier for an officer to judge when using a baton as opposed to a taser.
 
The police force is the perfect job for bully's, psychopaths and murderers these days. These ***** are ignorant to freedom and the law, and they are given weapons to use against us and with a "shoot first ask questions later" policy.
Any person that tasers, shoots, beats up, and trains a dog to take chunks of flesh out of some one, simply because "it's just a job", needs to be hung at birth.
They are not public protectors any more, they are a paramilitary for the political elite, used to keep people from rising up against totalitarianism.

Was this guy really posing a threat? was he even looking at them? was he acting in a threatening manor? probalby not, but they just go ahead and shoot him anyway.
20 years ago, they would have just asked the guy what he's holding and dealt with it accordingly.

I work with the police regularly and have to say you live in a fantasy world I'm afraid. Their job looks bloody awful and the great majority of officers are just normal people with families to go home to. Normal people make mistakes and these guys get put in crap situations daily.

From the BBC article the gentleman himself seemed pretty understanding:

He said the 43-year-old man "acknowledged that his behaviour could have led to people being concerned".

Pretty sure they fall under s.5 prohibited weapons of the firearms act, along with semi automatic centrefire handguns.
