Whoo Seagate about to break the 1TB HDD barrier

why on earth would anyone need 1TB

i wonder if in a few years time they'll be questions on this forum about sticking 2 1TB drives in RAID 0. :D Surely not

I guess it would be good if you used your PC as server for a XBMC, this way you can have every series of most TV shows at the touch of a botton, as well as music and games. In fact im starting to come around to the idea. ;)

it may be all good having all these shows on your new "TB drive" but can you imagine what would happen if you lost all that data
you'd die from a heart attack losing all that information, or maybe cry like a baby for a few days (i know i would!)
unless ofcourse you have a silly amount of money and bought 2 for Raid 1 ;)

The only real way forward is to make sure you budget for two HD's when you make an upgrade as it is the only real way of making sure you can backup all of your data.
Even then remember you're only backing up "locally" so in case of fire and theft you still lose everything.

A friend of mine recently went out to buy a 400GB HD.
In the end he actually settled on 2x 320GB.
He uses one of his 320GB units as his main drive and then uses the majority of his second drive as somewhere to backup data from his main drive.

RAID 1 would be an option for him - it will give him a slight read performance increase as well.

I run 2x 250GB WD units in my machine and mainly use the second drive as a place to backup data from the first.
Backing up on to DVD just isn't an option at 4.5GB - 9GB per disk.
Tape backup with high capacity is too expensive.
Soho level NAS may well be the way forward for me.

Anyone downloading once per 3 days @ night with a broadband connection.
I've filled 1.08 tB out of my 1.26 TB's already.

Personally happy and hoping it'll drive the 500 gb's drives prices down, so i can replace some of my 250 gb hdd's with a 500... as more hdd's wont fit into my case...

1 TB HDDs, yes please!!
Although realistically I am just hoping that it will push the price of 750GB drives down a little bit so I can get a pair and RAID them :)

TB storage is necessary nowadays on servers with databases reaching the earth's population. But you can buy for home if you can afford :p

An adslmax connection can download 850gig every month though your isp might disagree with that

Hence i stay away from isp's with datalimits/fair use policy and only use unlimited broadband on a locked speed.

I really really hope it'll drive 500&750 gig hard drive prices down, i need more space!

If you find an isp that lets you download 850 gig a month I'd be interested to know who. Ours at present says 1 gig a week is the limit after which we are 'heavy users' lol

Whats the price per megabyte on these drives, it could make sense to buy one if they are cheapest in that way.
7 years ago I brought a gigantic 60gb  :D mainly because it was the cheapest per meg. Having a decent size meant it has been fairly future proof and its been used every day since purchased

I'm doing several times that with UK Online 22mbps
