Whoo Seagate about to break the 1TB HDD barrier

I know cardiff is trialing an all digital telephone system, not sure what the maximum speed of that is but in toyko where its used, the standard speed is 40meg

edit:
Will everybody in the UK get a 24Mbit/s broadband service?
BT Wholesale is planning to launch an up to 24Mbit/s wholesale next generation broadband services in January 2008. Where end users' existing broadband lines have been migrated to 21CN or they are connected to a 21CN broadband-enabled exchange, service providers will be able to choose to supply end users with products based on these next generation broadband services. That said the laws of physics are not going to change and distance from the exchange and other factors will affect a customer's broadband speed.

To rephrase satty's question:

Is there a LEGAL reason why anyone would need a 1TB hdd?

Thats true, I really should have said legal, however is downloading free to air TV programmes illegal I didn't think it was but im not sure.

It must be said that most people would struggle to fill it all with legal data.

Could could fill terrabytes with legal data - all music as WAV, plus a high quality OGG copy for my iriver. DVD-Videos saved as ISO for HD streaming. If you have HD-DVD then wave goodbye to several terabytes.

Yes, unless you have permission from the copyright holder.

If it's been broadcast in your own country, and say you missed that episode or get lousy reception I see no problem (morality) in downloading that episode then deleting it once you've watched it.

Remember that IPTV is supposed to become very big in the next few years and depending on the DRM it could require 1TB hard disks depending on usage. By the time it comes in the TB drives should be affordable for Joe Public.

Afaik there are 1gb net services in Tokyo. The BT 21CN stuff is a load of crap, essentially it's just ADSL2+ which does about 24mb max.

Wow a 1gb net service, man those japanese dont do things by half.

The way I see it 2x Samsung 500gig drives would do the job + just over 200 quid not bad....

Aint see these new Hitachi 1TB drives @ 200 quid yet.. guess there due for 1st quarter so anything in the next 3-4 months... Question is would anyone trust a Hitachi drive?

The 750gig Seagate @ £250 so the 1TB drive should be proberly 300-350 quid lol

Why trust a Seagate any more than Hitachi... tbh the rule is always have at least twice the capacity you need, for backing up data (only really needed for important stuff, but 1tb is a lot to lose).

2 Hitachis here, been running solidly for months. Many reports of Hitachi reliability about on par with the likes of seagate (storagereview site). The issues with the 1TB drives will be 5 platters more than anything else.

So far the oldest hdd in my pc, is a hitachi, and is in great condition according to SMART, i trust hitachi a lot more as samsung wich stopped working after some time, and when it was working it had a low avrg read speed...

For me hitachi is just as much trustworthy as the seagates, western digital is in between and i dont trust samsung and maxtor anymore...

This obviously someone who hasn't got into recording TV onto HD. At 2GBytes per hour those mpeg 2 files soon fill the drive up. My problem is I never have the time to watch it all!
