Was running a Q9650 under a Titan Fenrir. Very pleased with low temps.

All housed in a 'substantial' (fortunately) Haf 932 case ; which I decided needed a clean.

Placed on top of desk and cleaned then in an 'inspirational' :( moment decided to clean the case wheels , did ,turned my back to the case to speak to better half and it then fell (wheeled?) itself off the desk and nosedived onto the floor.

Lots of swear words , lump out of carpet , blame better half ,later - checked to find that the case was slightly bent (pushed back into shape very easily :) ) but otherwise all 'looked' o'k.

Got it up and running again and checked temps - now running at 75c at idle rather than the usual 29c .

Dismantled and realised that the fall had caused the cooler to move/slip - not a problem , just reinstall I thought but then noticed that one of the heatpipes (to the back of the cpu - nearest to rear case fan) was now indented/creased in two places (towards the corners of the cpu) and between the two indents there was a scratch.

On reinstall added a little xtra thermal paste at the points if indent/scratch and it's running pretty well again - 30c at idle.

Just concerned that the indents etc might 'fail' at some indeterminate point so have decided to get a new cooler .

Rushed a bit and have gone ahead and ordered a Megahalems but am now wondering if I'd have been better served being a bit more paitent and waiting for the corsair h50 to come back in stock or going for a different air cooler?

As it's the weekend would hope that if I decided to change and contacted OcUk first thing monday then hopefully 'no problem' if I wished to change.

So summary ?'s from 'idiot' of the week here are :-
1. Am I right 'not' to trust the 'indented' Titan ?
2. Is the Megahalems the 'best' air cooler (intention would be to use push/pull config) ?
3. Does the Megahalems outperform the Corsair - Am looking for 'quiet' but very good cooling ?
4. Best fans - Apache ?
5. Anyone know if I would have any problems fitting either to an asus P5Q-E motherboard ?

Better half has just reminded me that it is essential that I point out that the case falling of the desk had nothing to do with her !! - For myself the jury's still out on that one :D

1. Am I right 'not' to trust the 'indented' Titan ? Yes

3. Does the Megahalems outperform the Corsair - Am looking for 'quiet' but very good cooling ? Pass not got my H50 yet
4. Best fans - Apache ? Defo in the top 3 for price/CFM/Noise
5. Anyone know if I would have any problems fitting either to an asus P5Q-E motherboard ? Should be fine

1. Probably best to have changed it yeah
2. Megahalem or True
3. The Megahelms and H50 are about the same if you use identical fans.
4. People say the Apaches are the best i have 2 on my H50 and can't fault them.
5. An H50 will fit to any board as the pump/cooler is very compact.

It appears that the temps have increased by approx 5c since rebuilding.

Running @ 4ghz and idle reads 34c as compared to 29c before.(when I read 30c earlier it was , in fact, the temp. after the comp. had reset itself)

At least it seems stable !!

I doubt dents in a heatpipe would matter. Even if it is split nothing terrible would happen, just that one would stop working. Safe though not as good a cooler anymore.
Slightly tongue in cheek, but if you make a habit of this get the H50. Hanging a really big lump of metal off the motherboard then dropping it is asking for trouble, I think you're lucky the board is ok. However if the missus has learnt her lesson and it wont fall again, megalahems or TRUE is the way to go. Not much to go wrong with a piece of metal.

38mm fans are the way to go. I've just bought one (yep, just one) san ace and it is lovely.

It'll be ok, if it's just creased a little then all that would have happened is a little stress hardening and a tiny loss of ductility, as the cooler is a static component and doesn't really go under much cyclic loading then there's not much chance of fatigue unless you constantly heavy handedly move it around or dry hump the damn thing :p

Like has been said even in the event of that pipe failing then the others will still do a good enough job of cooling.

The new prolimatech cooler arrived yesterday - excellent service again from OcUk :D

Have today installed it and am currently running with Tuniq Tower fan - exhausting to the rear.

Only managed a quick play but so far am impressed - knocked 2c of idle and ,more importantly, 10c on load (intel burn test standard 5 runs). - Running Q9650 @ 4.05

Will probably have a go with Push and pull Apache fans at the weekend, which may shave a further 2/3 c off :)

Certainly much better build quality than the Fenrir but at 1/2 as much again it's to be expected.
Will probably keep the Fenrir as a spare -cannot see a queue for a slightly creased on one heatpipe cooler ;)

Would not recomend letting comp. drop from desk to floor BUT would recomend both the Fenrir (really cannot blame it for creasing a heatpipe and otherwise it cooled quite well )and the Megahalems as coolers.
