Who's fed up with it?

Console gamers usually enjoy sitting back on the sofa with there £200 console playing games on there 42" TV withought sitting at a desk and chair installing drivers all the time and sorting problems etc

Also take account of what HW91 said.

you can still sit on a sofa infront of a 42" tv with a pc using an xbox controller though..

how often do people actually mess about with drivers and solve problems?

+1 I can't play CoD for **** on a PS3 controller and my friends won't play it on PC. I want to kick their arses cross platform :(.

Never ever going to happen the advantage that PC gamers have with Keyboard and Mouse will never go away then you get all the console gamers complaining and flaming the game makers saying PC is favoured etc.

You guy's do realize you can play using keyboard and mouse on PS3? some eagle eye product...

I bought COD:MW2 and COD:Black Ops on the PS3 so that I could play online with friends/people from work etc. You get used to the pad pretty quick. I still play COD(4):MW1 on the PC and have done quite a few hours in the past week. I didn't even bother downloading Black Ops on Steam for the free weekend.

I don't see how fps would make any difference, FPS is just the amount of frames, you can run the same thing at 30fps and 300fps and they would still be sinced. Lag would play a part in it yes but that is already true for all online games on console and PC.

It depends on how the game engine is written i.e. whether it has game tics that are independent of framerate. It is not uncommon for console games to have a link between the two because they are capped to a given framerate and the idea is the game always runs at 30/60fps and so it is always running at the same speed.

For modern developers having decoupled clientside frame rendering isn't that difficult however it would still be another thing to factor into development, especially due to potential cross-platform timing differences. It wouldn't be sync issues that would be the problem, it would be the fact that in order to avoid sync issues, they might have to start catering for the lowest denominator, basically compromising the game on some platforms to suit the needs of others - not just in terms of graphics like we have now, but also in terms of networking and the potential impact on any related threads (potentially rendering/input/whatever).

I seem to remember Carmack answering a question during one of his Quakecon speeches on cross platform pros and cons, forget which one now...might have been 2007.

Bump. I don't know, felt this needed to be brought up again.

The arguments for it haven't changed in the last few months. Its a stupid idea for competitive FPS games, should be considered for co-operative FPS games, shouldn't be considered for RTS and should be considered for sports and driving games.

Why bump? There isn't anything new to discuss. Mouse/keyboard gets a giant advantage in certain genre's and MS/Sony have no intention of natively supporting them due to the impact it would have on sales.

I can see why it would appeal in some ways and the problems are not as insurmountable as some people make out.

1) Co-op games, its less critical that the players skills be balanced. I enjoy playing coop game with my brother online, it would be nice to have the option to do so with console-owing mates.

2) Server browsers/ matchmaking could have the option to filter pc/ cross platform, with console gamers having the same choice.

3) Slower paced games where reactions are less important could work well, like turn based strategy, or racing games where a pad is not a disadvantage.

3) Where balanced skill does matter, could have the option to only join cross platform play with the controls set to 360 pad (lets face it, 90% of pc pads are 360 nowadays).

I know developers have enough on their plate supporting a zillion platforms & technologies but I'll welcome any further attempts.

CS:Go will support it natively on the PS3 with cross-platform support.

I agree though. Why bump? It's the only title due out supporting it, and there's already a long thread discussing cross-platform play in it.
