Who's got a Seagate 7200.10..?

ive never done one before and its just a case of setting it up in the bios, creating the array with the raid controller bios which boots after the first one.....Then install windows and when it asks about raid controller push S and use the disk raid driver supplied with the mainboard
Nearly, you need to press F6 right at the start of the install to activate the press S option later on.

The Raptor isn't any quicker. Its 10krpm spindle speed gives it a better average seek time than the Seagate but the data density of the Raptor is poor (37Gb per platter) compared to the Seagate's 187Gb per platter

This huge data density means that despite the slower spindle speed the Seagate can get data off the disks slightly faster than the Raptor.

Just another quickie,

Are the new Western Digital 150GB Raptor's quicker than the Seagates?

Yes but not by enough to warrant being 4 times the price per Gb in my opinion.
They are also louder, I've got a 150GB Raptor, 74GB Raptor & 2 Seagate 500GB's their really isnt much in it in terms of speed, I'll do some tests sometime this weekend to do some time comparisons if I can.

Just ordered 3x 500gb 7200.10s and a PCI-E Rocketraid to turn into a fileserver... I didnt realise the performance was so good on these disks; im just a seagate fanboi

Looking forward to seeing what they'll do; - i'll report back.

Got a couple of 320's with pink glue, they are very quite, and can only be heard when reading data from the drive, and thats that satisfying crrrrnnnnncchhh noise :D

Damn fast as well.

Im glad you said that as mine in the raid 10 config are quiet but when reading they crnnnnnnnnnnnnch as you so put it:D

I have 1 320gb drive and having a look at another for more storage of dam digi pics on :D

Very recommended, have pink/purple glue ones and are whisper quite, only time i hear it is when defragging the drive.

Can i just ask... what do you mean by pink/purple glue?
I assume you're saying that somewhere there's coloured glue on it and depending on the colour, they're different in some way. I've not seen any, where is it? Also, how are they different?

Good drives, I have mine in a OCUK Silentmaxx enclosure and is very quiet as a result. I had a 74GB Raptor before and apart from a few seconds longer on the boot time I've not noticed any decreases in speed.

There are two types of glue which can be differentiated by looking at the colour of glue on the underside. The white ones were the noisy ones and the pink ones quiet.

I got mine from a competitor though from what i read its a little random on which one you get. Maybe try phoning OCUK or others and see if they can help you get the one you want :) maybe they will be cool with you

Holy Smoking Disc-Drives batman - that's quick for a Raid 5 config (134mb/s read is blistering) - what controller are you using?

Highpoint RocketRaid 2320 - The PCI-E 4x 8 port card...

I intend to be making use of the Online Capacity Expansion...
Currently running 3x 500gb in Raid 5

They're around £150-175 +VAT so about half the price of an Areca 1220 but unlike the Areca card the Highpoint doesn't have a dedicated XOR processing engine. Rather the 2320 is an "accelerated software" card which provides better write performance than fully software solutions like the Nvidia mobo controllers but still uses the main CPU for XOR processing.
