Currently have Titan black sli, but I'm in the early stages of building myself an itx skylake build. This means I'll be restricted to a single card. Now I'm a bit worried I'm gonna lose a lot of performance and will be playing games at medium settings on my 3440x1440 monitor.
Has anyone done anything similar and were you happy?
I do plan on upgrading the gpu aswell but not till a month or two after I finish my build.

I have just upgraded to a 970 from a 670 which i had 4 years,always been happy with a single gpu.

I think if you game a lot them a really good single gpu will be good enough,im a casual gamer maybe a hour or less a day, resolution isn't important for me,as long as the game works im happy.

Yes I had 780Ti SLI which in general was very good, but did have issues as any multi-gpu setup will have from time to time. I initially went toa Titan X (Maxwell) which was a step down slightly in max fps numbers, but was a smoother amd more consistent experience altogether. I now have a 1080 and the same applies.

I doubt I will ever go back to SLI until Nvidia and game developers start treating it with the very expensive respect it deserves. Too many times AAA games are launching without any support or very lacklustre multi-gpu support. It is highly frustrating playing the latest game you have waited a long time to play, getting lower fps than you should and then having to switch SLI off leaning you have a GPU sitting there idle doing nothing.

Single high end performance is very good for all but the most extreme of display settings (Ultra 4K) etc.

Of course gsync/freesync tech helps as well. I imagine at your res a 1070 would be the ideal card. It is roughly equivalent/ slightly faster than Maxwell Titan X.

I've got a 1080FE and could do with an extra 30% to max out GTA V with a few mods and average over 60fps at 1440p. I'm not willing to shell out for a Titan P even though I could afford to.

There's faster cards than TB's in SLI so that should answer your question, it's just a case of spending the money as they hold a big premium at the moment.

Having said that an £1100 Titan Xp costs less than a pair of Titan Blacks did when they hit the market so maybe that's not an issue that matters in which case a Titan Xp will do a great job at 3440x1440 giving you the ultimate ITX machine.

been playing 4K lately with a single 1080 (3840x2160)

Now not all games can be MAXED, but quite a few can

Witcher 3 45fps
Overwatch Ulltra 100fps
American Truck Sim 100fps
WoW 100fps
Doom 60fps constent (think vsync was left on)

since 570s ive always been SLI
570 SLI
7970 SLI
7990s
980 SLI
Now a single 1080, not planning on going SLI, but im planning to go Ti. not for perf but for non founders edition for quietness

I would have thought a 1080 would handle 3440x1440 easy

It handles beautifully.

I'm extremely happy with my EVGA 1080 FTW. Even though I had one blow on me. OCUK RMA was fast and painless. Will last me a few years. All settings ultra on my Acer x34A 3440x1440p. Every game I've thrown at it at or above 60fps. Lovely card.

Still rocking a 980ti @ 3440x1440, it's running the games I play fine with most settings up.

Ran SLI in the past and I'll stick to just one card from now on unless doing a silly build.

It all depends your monitor.
Does it have gsync?
If so a single overclocked 1080 or Titan P will cut it easily on highest settings.

Do you plan to watercool?

i dunno i always want more performance , but i do not want sli or xfire as i had bad experience since 3870 cf.

for me with even with overclocked 1080 gtx i want more , maybe because i am on 2560x1440 144hz and i want constant 144 with nearly max settings , even if i don't need to as the monitor has gsync .

would be nice to have super great leap in gpu power someday like 8800gtx was

More than happy with my 290X. Pretty good at 1080p/144Hz and have since switched to 1440p/144Hz where it performs fairly well if you reduce some of the demanding settings.

Recent demanding games are usually set to a mix of high with a few medium on the 290X at 1440p.
