Why are almost all ATX motherboards 4 DIMM when running 2 ram sticks optimal and all most people need

Worth it as in will you see tangible gains outside of synthetic benchmarks? No.

You'd also need to run your FCLK at 2000MHz for it to make sense, and very few CPU's can do that stable. Most top out at 1900MHz.
I'll pretend to understand what you said. I understand somewhat. (Is it like fsb) So basically it's not worth it?

I prefer the flexibility.. Currently running 2x16, so when I come to upgrade cpu I can double the ram at the same rather than buying a new mobo.
It's not often I use more than two sticks but it's nice to have the flexibility.

It's useful if you decide to get more memory and unwilling to ditch those two sticks, ie I went from 4GB to 8GB using some sticks I moved over from another machine.

Just had a look if DDR3 is still available, hard to find so that means finding second hand higher capacity chips.
