Why are Americans so nice?

They are certainly not portrayed particularly well in TV programs where workplace violence seems acceptable particularly in law enforcement. And groups of people supposed to be working as a team are often shown to have issues.

Having lived in the US when I was younger and travelled there for work a lot in the last few years, I think I'm a bit jaded to it now.

Sure, waiting staff, hotel staff are super friendly but unfortunately it is all an act and they're just very good at it. You listen in to conversations when they're serving other Americans and the whole charade just trips off the tongue from both sides.. "Good morning sir how are you doing today?" "Oh I'm very well thank you, how are you?" "I'm doing great thank you, now what can I get you started with, some coffee, juice, eggs" and the whole thing just goes on and on :o

Granted I travel to LA where this is probably 10x worse but I've come to the conclusion that Americans just love the sound of their own voice and this just makes it worse. Whole conversations of complete nonsense. It's small talk ramped up to eleventy-stupid!

Serving staff aside, I find some Americans nice, some not. Same as anywhere else. They are way less scared of talking to strangers though and that can be a good or a bad thing.

Something to do with tips maybe?

They have to earn their wage.

. . .
Yes, because a government foreign policy is exactly linked to how nice that country's populace is
A characteristic of a "democratic" Government tends to be characteristic of the "majority" of the electorate - that's allegedly how democracy works - c.f. Agent Orange who nobody could ever describe as "nice".

Old thread but I've met a few Americans and they've all been nice really, yeah, you're going to get an odd ball like anywhere but as a post above says they're less likely to not talk to strangers, which I think where the nice was comes from.

Naturally depends where you go though, like anywhere

Ah OK, so it's fair to say you're an embodiment of Theresa May then? Our government represents everything you stand for right now? Classy.

You're just being obtuse. A governemt elected to represent the people does not automatically make them representative of the people. You know that, don't bother to argue a daft point.

God give me strength, you fail on every point.

I won't say I'll never move back - but I doubt I will. Can't say America takes my fancy though - my experience of Americans in New York was terrible, so rude unless they wanted something from you (like a tip), then they came across as fake. I'm sure that the rest of America & Americans are much better though.

I agree with this it depends where you go the touristy places are pleased to see you but there are places where they are definitely not downtown L.A. for example probably the rudest taxi driver I ever met was there. And there are places where you don't want to step outside, ever. There was a fatal shooting outside the hotel thats not something you get everyday here. Elsewhere I found people much the same as anywhere else once you're in the same peer group etc.

People think of America as a country but forget to realise it is really a continent with "countries inside it". I have only been to the east coast but the contrast of Washington to say South Carolina is quite staggering. Some parts you had nice people and some parts were plain rude. Also some parts I felt being white would have gotten a different reaction if I hadn't been. Also I found Americans quite guilible and do not get our dry sense of humor and sarcasm.

Well, thanks for that, here's an idea, why not think of giving a comment, opinion or trope next time you are contemplating posting on a discussion.

Wind your kneck in before you make a complete *** of yourself. It was a clear (to anyone with an ounce of sense) way to point out that not everyone anywhere is ‘always’ nice. I notice a difference going to London which is far less friendly than say York. Shear numbers comes into the equation.
