Why are certain types of racism tolerated on here?

Mik3, how old are you?

Does my age make my comments any less worthy?

That's ageism and is offensive to me.

Before you ask I dont call my local Chineze 'chinky' I call it pee's, as I refer to him when we have a beer together.

Whilst we're already on a similar note, what is with all this ageism (sp?) on forums. Just because someone might be younger than you they know less or they don't matter as much?. Blimey, what difference does his age actually make to anything?

One of my favourites that.

I've read the entire thread, albeit skimming the parts the OP wasn't involved in.

Toryglen boy, in my opinion, is a nickname used to imply pride from living in the area of Toryglen. From this, I would guess that you are one of these super-nationalist Scots that think that independence is the best thing in the world and that we should all be fighting the English behind Mel Gibson.

Get over it, the use of the word Jock is not insulting, it is taken by most Scots to be a light-hearted description of a Scottish person.

I do find Smelly Sock offensive, but that's because it's far from complementary.

OT: don't take this as a troll, but there is a degree of xenophobia in Toryglen according to an article in the Scotsman - link

Alasdair (aka a Jock)

hmm, tough one.

I have friends of all nationalities and races.

I quite frequently call my friend from Huddersfield who MC's and other such gangsterish acts, "*****". It's not offensive, he doesn't find it so, hell it's not even in the right context, he's Indian.

Then my pakistani friend rowhan finds it amusing when I call him "staniboy" - so it's all relative.

I would never call somebody a racist name if I was in an argument or to cause them offence, as i'm not racist. However I do call my friends by "racist names" in day to day conversation, but because of the tone it is percieved in the way it is intended, as fun...perhaps mocking society?

It would be like messing around with a girl mate and calling her a bitch, it'd be in good fun therefore would cause no harm.

I suppose to conclude, I believe "racist" terms only become racist when they are said with conviction and with intent to cause offence or has negative or hostile connotations attatched.

I don't like prejudice or discrimination of ANY kind but I don't find 'Jock' offensive at all. I don't like 'sweaty sock' though because I hate cockneys and their stupid language.

Howdy

We all know that words such as "****" and "Chink" are really not on, and not to be tolerarated on here, and rightly so!

Then why are words like Jock, Mick, Taff, Paddy etc. still used? surely what one person finds offensive as a name a brand or a stereotype shouldnt be tolerated either?

I am fed up with being called a "Jock" by people who think its ok (and yes, it does happen on the sports forum) and personally, i would like it to stop. Even worse is the ubiquitous "Sweaty Sock" that some people can see no insult in it at all !!

thanks for listening

:)

I may not be at the moment but I may have been - my ex-wife was born in Wokingham :p

Stan :)

(I'm pretty sure you're not my ex brother-in-law - neither of them would have enough wit to be able to switch a PC on ;)

man... some folks eh. Whats the problem with being called a Jock? If i was Scottish it wouldnt bother me in the slightest.

When Yanks refer to us as Limey's i think its good because i believe they mean no harm in it and its kinda like saying "mate" or "buddy" or "pal"...same goes for the aussies calling us poms. No harm intended.

See the cup as half full, not half empty and get your head from out your a***.

Doosht :D
