Why are certain types of racism tolerated on here?

Your far too sensitive about racism.

Taking the **** is a great british past time, take all the englishman, scotsman and irishman jokes as an example.

People need to stop being so uptight about how things offend them, and just get on with life.

Nobody cares if you feel offended by simple words, get over it.

so because its a "great british pastime" it should be accepted ?!?

That just wasnt a constructive post was it solac :(

Why its how I feel on the subject? Getting anoyed by stupid words that probably where said to the OP as a joke; people need to stop blowing everything out of proportion.

I work with a Jock, a Taffy and a Paddy and none of them give a stuff.
When I worked abroad in France I was called Tommy and I didn't give a stuff.

good for you, and good for them

i on the other hand do

Problem is the word RACIST is being abused and far often than not the white guy gets a clip round the ear rather than the ethnic.

Take this black guy at my dads work.

Thief
Sleeps on the job
damages property

But they wont fire him

yes it may be how you feel about the subject but you shouldnt assume that everybody should feel the same way, we are all different. I personally dont mind racism towards me (saying that I havent received much) but I respect that a lot of people find it hurtful

So why post it on here, your obviously going to get other peoples opinions, so if I cant post my opinion because its not "constructive" thats going against the point of forums.

Howdy

We all know that words such as "****" and "Chink" are really not on, and not to be tolerarated on here, and rightly so!

Then why are words like Jock, Mick, Taff, Paddy etc. still used? surely what one person finds offensive as a name a brand or a stereotype shouldnt be tolerated either?

I am fed up with being called a "Jock" by people who think its ok (and yes, it does happen on the sports forum) and personally, i would like it to stop. Even worse is the ubiquitous "Sweaty Sock" that some people can see no insult in it at all !!

thanks for listening

:)

Might be because most of the people sence of humour and laugh it off, some like playing the victim

thats my opinion anyway.... call me a brit, pom [insert your abbrevation/racist name for english here] i dont care.

not at all, this is a public forum after all.

i wasnt offended at your opinion, just the fact that you judged me because it wasnt the same as yours

Problem with the "sweaty Socks" is that most of them have got a massive "******'s lip" on their shoulder because they're from the arse end of Britain.

Joke BTW ;) :D

rofl

i do see what the op is getting at, and i too have experienced the 'sweaty sock' jokes having studied at uni in england for four years... don't bother me though having said i can see how some folks could get easily offended by it. Equally, there are some work colleagues who take great delight in telling extremely racist jokes which i distance myself from however there are some who laugh then gauge others reactions before saying something like 'ohh ohh... thats terrible' seems daft to me.

If someone you see every day calls you something you don't like, tell them. If it was just a random comment - get over it.

People have refered to other races, genders and followers of other faiths with all sorts of humourous and possibly insulting names for all of time and in the most part it isn't intended as offensive.

Most of these terms such as jock, paddy, tommy, taffy, kiwi, ozzi, chink, ****, yankie, argy, frog and countless others really are just slang words for people of the respected countries. Sometimes it probably isn't the best time to use such words but it can't be as big an issue as you seem to think as every tom dick and harry would be getting arrested every time they opened their mouth.

i didnt think for one second this would cause as much of a reply on here as it has ... but your still missing the point.

"not meant as offensive" is a great statement that covers a multitude of sins, the only way to not cause offence etc. is to not say words others might find offensive anyway

so get over it yourself

I think you really need to get a grip on reality here dude.

The word Jock is rarely used as a racial slur - more often than not it is used in a lighthearted manner - it is a word used to describe Scots the same as the word Geordie is used to describe someone from Newcastle or Scouser to describe somone from Liverpool.

Most of the problems arising from usage of words such as these are caused by oversensitivity or a desire to be offended rather than any racist intent.

Lighten up chap.

exactly... so the only way not to cause offence to anyone is to take a vow of silence. and since people are not going to do that you may as well get used to the odd jab, as long as it isn't meant too seriously.

the only way to not cause offence is to think before talking ...
