Why are certain types of racism tolerated on here?

I demand that all 'Ozzies' stop calling us 'Pommies' immediately!

Oh, and while we're at it, all 'Yanks' can stop calling us 'Limeys' too.

Its downright offensive and racialist!
All the Frogs and Krauts agree with me on this.

If my demands aren't met, I shall be forced to sulk for a week.

because they like to pretend it is, giving them an excuse to cause trouble?

using terms like "****" etc is not racist. check the dictionary.

however if you were to say, "im not going to go to that shop, its run by dirty ****'s", then you would effectively be racially profiling them/being prejudice (if you did not know the shop workers but were presuming them to be dirty because they were of pakistani origin..)

its the potential connotations you percieve when you may say the word which may result in some form of prejudice or profiling which could be constrewed as racism. but the word is simply an abbreviated form of the nation - Pakistan (which is often abbreviated to PAK).. in a similar way to a british man being shortened to a Brit.

that isnt intrinsicly racist. however, if they were to say, " ******** brits, the lot of them smell" which would be racial prejudice/profiling...

unfortunately most pakistani's dont seem to refer to the dictionary...

as i said i dont mind being called a **** .

In my opinion it all depends how these names are used.
If the name calling is done in an angry way then its offensive but if its used as a description eg got a number for a **** taxi, are you going the chinky?, you can get them from the **** shop, go see Taffy in that room etc then its no problem.
Looking at the age of the OP this thread must be a wind up.

Last week I offended my Italian boss. he asked me if something was OK and I gave the international call sign for OK which is the thumb and index finger touching with the other three in the air. He told me that was very offensive where he came from.

start biting your thumb nail in front of him, and see what he says.

some poeple are way too easily offended. i mean in the UK giving somone the V's is meant to be offensive. does anyone really care or bother? does it offend you to provocation or do u just return the sign and tell them to do one?

I can see why people 'can' offended by different acronyms, generally these words in the past, were only used in a derogatory manner, so if you were called a ****/chinky/******/jock etc it mean that somebody was not being very nice to, or worse still you were about to get chased down and have the crap beaten out of as used to happen in day gone by.

As Dmpoole say its all about the context in which the name is used.

Personally i dont use the words, not because of PC but more out of respect, as i know the kind of offense these words cause, but with my mates yeah will use all kinds of slurs (as you do) as i know these people, and their reactions.

Its like you wouldnt make a 'yo momma' on the street to a random person.

I don't find the name Jock offensive at all. Infact there are lots of men in Scotland who were christened John but prefer to be called Jock. The term Jock was originally used to describe Scottish soldiers just the same as Tommy was used to describe English soldiers.

I always thought Jocks were sporty fellows rather confident in their abilities

Only if you are a Yank :) Since we are using colloqialisms for different nations here.

But now you mention it, we jocks are rather confident in our sporting abilities, having just beaten France :D For anyone about to try and bring me down, these moments don't happen often, allow me this little bit of joy.

Personally I don't care much what I am referred to as, I can give as good back as I get. :)

Racism still goes on loads, it's only REALLY bad when a white man assaults a black man, then you'll hear about it............

And if you look on MTV base i think it is, you will see there's some or other weekly show named something along the lines of "Black Music all week this week" now if i was to make a music show dedicated to only white people, we'd have a riot on our hands.

England has a fantastic team, and its in your own backyard, and apart from us Jocks, you probably love to stuff the krauts more than anyone else in the world !!

I don't see the problem with anyone calling me a "Jock" I'm very proud to be one actually ;)

It's just light hearted banter at the end of the day, don't find it offensive at all

and i think some people are offended by comments like that just because they think they SHOULD be.

I agree with this. I'm sorry, but we are in 2006, not the 50's or what not when out grandfathers used **** as a racist comment. If a pakistani were to call me a Brit, then why should I not be able to abbreviate his origin?
