Looking at buying a 3 or 4tb drive and always seems the enclosed ones are cheaper!

Have seen a 4tb drive in an enclosure for 30 cheaper than bare!

I'm guessing I loose warranty of I remove it?

erm not sure about the HDD removal... I dont see why they wouldnt cover the drives, also now idea why they are cheaper either.

You might find it's got a custom interface board with only a USB port on it, rather than having a bridgeboard to convert from SATA to USB/Firewire/whatever. The 2.5in variety have certainly gone that way...

That's annoying! I didn't even think about that. I guess there's no way to find out

I'm not sure whats different in those pics, the indent in the top right is a different shape?

I have no idea which I have though, can I check in hdtune?

A quick comparison between mine and another members suggests there is not much difference, posts 22 and 23 compare a 2 and 3 platter 2TB seagate using trial version of HDtune Pro (not the free hdtune)http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=23143546&highlight=username_eddyr#post23143546

runs of interest are the cutnpaste HDtune pro screenshots on the right of each of ours.
Triple platter (mine) show a higher burst rate but longer seek times and slightly slower min/max/avg.

I have a 3Tb seagate external that's a bit iffy and won't connect sometimes, prob a dodgy PCB, going to remove it from the enclosure since its over a year old now and use it in a NAS.

so was the warranty issue ever found out?

for example im looking at some 2tb wd red drives for a nas but noticed i could get 3tb seagate externals for the same price, if i removed the drives is the warranties void?

Found the same thing last week, 2 x Seagate 2TB enclosures were cheaper than 2 bare drives.
The drives in the enclosures were exactly the same models as the bare oem ones.

The world's gone mad.

This reminds me of those occasions where buying a new printer seems to be cheaper than replacing cartridges.

And we wonder why our summer is more like autumn !
