Why are RX-8s so cheap?

RX-8 = Great car - **** engine

Not saying the Wankel is **** but modern 4 pot turbos have moved on so much in both performance, refinement, economy and emissions.

It would have been a top seller with an economical 1.8 - 2.0 litre 4 pot turbo.

Drinks oil = false
Drinks fuel = very true

Would only buy a newer one unless you are a mechanic and can get parts cheap.
Dont buy one if you are on a budget.

Right should probably start this thread by saying i'm not in the market for an RX-8 (atleast not yet anyways ;)), just curious as to how some seemingly low mileage not too old and good condition sports cars are so cheap . Presumably i'm missing something but no idea what that might be, heard rotarys were pretty bad for everyday use but thought they fixed that with the renesis?

Low milage is very car specific these days, if you look after a V8 Lexus properly you can expect half a million miles before an engine rebuild, an RX8 is... different.

In general its a car you buy if you really like it and can afford not to care, ofc if you can do that the are better cars for the money so the really like it is pretty important.

This is why they are cheap.

They are not cars for people who can't spend money on them but generally the people with that sort of money want something a bit better than an RX8.

It's a car that these days, you only buy if you really really want an RX8, not just if you want a cheap sporty car.

One the main reasons my i bought my RX8 was because i could afford to buy it cash without spending all my saving...
If i bought one the other cars i was interested in they would have been about double the price and would have used up all my saving..Which would been to heart breaking to see my bank account going from about £8000 to £0

Plus i have always liked the RX8's and RX7's and wanted to try a car with a rotary engine..

The owner of a Subaru Impreza who lives next door to me is on his third engine and second gearbox..

Unlucky. Impreza engines/gearboxes are very reliable. Its when you fiddle with them, abuse them and generally neglect them that they will bite you.

I've seen an MY00 Impreza turbo with 180K on the OE clutch. Believe it or not.

My 99 Impreza Turbo is on 102k with the original OE clutch and I'm running 300Ib/ft + of torque! I'm also on the original engine and gearbox, I think if you treat them with some mechanical sympathy they will last a long time!

Most people who don't like the RX8 are poor drivers because you have to be a good driver to drive the RX8 properly, this is fact, please do not ask me to source my fact as I am currently tracking an elephant in India, by foot, and dont have great 3G signal

I've got an RX8 and recently thought about replacing it with an E92 coupe (325i) or an A5. Took them both out for a test drive, and I'm sorry but neither of those cars made me feel as special as the RX8, nor did they feel as agile. I've ended up keeping the RX8.

Yes its expensive to fuel, BUT, you're buying into an unique car (you won't see many on the road day to day) which looks great and drives very well. You have to consider offsetting the running costs against the purchasing costs.

A similar year 350z with similar mileage will cost up to 8k more to buy up front, and imho apart from straight line hammer speed the RX8 beats the 350 in every area...but I'm biased :)

Plus did i mention they look sexy :D (heres a video of me tooling around in mine :p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kneHsvDkUTc )

"won't see many on the road" LOL...........

I just drove past 3 RX8's on my trip to the shop and back ( about 6 miles)

Plus my own RX8 (that makes it 4)
