Why are RX-8s so cheap?

But at what cost?

The MX-5 / MGF types are great cars and good fun but imho need money throwing at them to up the performance.

Things like the S2000 cost too much to buy and insure.

You are then left with the older stuff, 944 / 968 which all cost more to buy and are even more fickle and expensive to run than the RX8.

The RX8 is great fun to drive, yes the engine is lacking in flexibility and you need to drive with your foot welded to the floor to make the most out of the rotary, but with limited total millage meaning the fuel costs don't matter and provided you don't suffer from engine issues then you have a sweet driving remarkably practical car for penny’s.

I really do think some situations suit RX8 ownership, but as we know not many of these people exist.

Indeed, they sold rather well. More of them than 330ci's for example.

And if 330ci's were a unique car in any way this might be a factor, but considering snooze mobile BMW's all look exactly the same, how many 3 series coupe's were sold over all in comparison to the RX8, let alone your average joe public who would see one and not realise it was in any way different from its equally rubbish but at least practical brother, the bog standard 3 series.

Sorry about making another thread, did do a search and couldn't find any :(

Looking at the replies it looks like RX-8s may be a good option, fast and handles well but is also practical which is a plus compared to say a S2000. I do hardly any miles so fuel cost won't be a huge concern, and have a mate whos a mechanic so get cheap parts and labour :D. So, providing I got one which has been looked after, they sound like a good buy :). Or have I missed something again?

Mate, they're lovely cars. Make sure you get one with FSH (main dealer) and ask the seller how often they topped up oil (1 quart every thousand miles or so. Oh and get a 231 not the 192.

Theres nothing else out there for the money that marry's the RX8 for a combination of price, performance, practicality, and aesthetics....if you can bear the urban mpg of 16...

I do around 8k miles a year, and even after owning it for a year and a half i still grin every time i get in and turn the ignition. I guess theres no better compliment for a car.

A similar year 350z with similar mileage will cost up to 8k more to buy up front, and imho apart from straight line hammer speed the RX8 beats the 350 in every area...but I'm biased :)

Unless the scientists responsible for making Pluto not a planet have declared 8k now begins with a two I think that comparison deserves more thought, just saying.

N the owners forum they recommend its started everyday. I could never justify that mpg for something thats not that quick. For that reason I'm out
