Why are there no British soaps about the middle classes?

Unless there are but I missed it? But "Corrie" (shudder) and Eastenders don't exactly cover anyone but the working class. Often short dramas (3 parters) or comedies cover the middle class, but not soaps.

I wonder if it is down to things like scope and budget. It would be quite hard to represent an office setting with budget such as they'd have per episode of Eastenders *guesses*.

Maybe it would just be boring!

Thoughts?

Who'd watch it? I didn't think the middle classes watched TV. They just listen to BBC world service, don't they?...;):)

Corrie is tongue in cheek fun.. Now where's me flat cap and whippet..

everyone is either a posh student or owns their own club/shop/pub/restuarant and doesnt live in the real world just like the middle class dont. infact does anyone on there have a proper job ?

Soaps are designed to make people feel good about themselves.

Therefore soaps featuring the middle class wouldn't really work.

I choose not to watch them so I don't have this problem.

It's odd, American soaps (from what very little I've seen of them) are usually about more affluent people, although the storylines are also completely insane.

Anyway, this is relevant:

I quite like Corrie, it's about as close as it get to "Carry on up-north..." Oooh err Mrs. as you'll get.

It's tongue in cheek, with the odd mad/funny plot. How the Rovers gets insurance is beyond me it's on fire more than the Australian bush..:)

Plus I don't feel the need to analyse everything I watch or read.

I wouldn't put those jobs in the middle class category.

Where are the office workers, commuters etc.. Everything (that I can think of) usually end up being comedies.

Possibly because soap operas are aimed at a certain demographic?

American soas are more about rich, affluent people such as Dallas, Australian ones such as neighbours are predominantly middleclass. I don't really watch them but ant Eastenders and Coronation St got a mix of people from different classes?

And wasn't Brookside middeclass as well?
