Why are they turning off Analogue TV?

Nope I live in the suburbs of a large town in Essex.
I live in the centre of a town with a population of 100,000 and over half the digital channels are not available, such as ITV1,2,3 C4, M4. Ironically when before I moved the 8 miles to live here I was able to get ITV and C4 on digital.

Every single one, yes. But at the moment it's not even 50% is it? (that isn't rhetorical btw, I am asking)

I dunno, to be honest. But given that all new tvs can either get Digital straight out of the box, or with a 20 quid freeview box, that percentage is only going to rise.

Whats the average life of a tv? 5-10 years? And for about 3 years now tvs have been modern enough for digital tv, so its entirely reasonable that by 2010 the percentage of TVs that can get digital broadcasts will be pretty high.....

More than that I've had a digital TV for 5 years.

Bought a USB DVB-T receiver last week.

Supplied aerial is crap but once plugged into the building one it's fantastic. :D

I can now watch the History channel in my playroom in peace. :D

of course the real reson that they are turning off analogue is so that the govmnt can sell that bit of the EM spectrum to the highest bidder and make a load more cash + some backhanders to ensure that the right company wins the austion.

I agree with what most have said, if you don't have digi TV yet, go and buy a STB and get it sorted.

I live in Peterborough and freeview is not available on my post-code.

Although a neighbour across the road paid for a new aerial to be fitted for around £120 and gets it fine!

I may go freeview if they do HD broadcasts for free :) - is that possible?

i live in peterborough and cant get it either :(

Just what I was gonna say!... Its all for the Government Coffas!... They just want more money!...

But on the up-side!... according to the freeview website we cant get any channels!... howcome I've been recieving all 40(odd) TV channels and the Digital radio channels for the last 8 months with only a few hic-ups!... (got nice FULL signal on the Sagem's signal meter!!) :D

Once you get a decent television (especially one that upscales digital television to its native HD resolution) you start to notice the terrible quality of the current freeview broadcasts. MPEG blocking artifacts and terrible detail on faces.

I've noticed that they crank up the bit rate on some broadcasts, for example the Planet Earth series looks absolutely fantastic, nearing DVD quality.

Maybe once they turn off the analogue broadcast there will be room to have permanently increased bit rates on the major 4 channels and in all film broadcasts.

IMO picture quality on Freeview is crap (and this is well recognised), so is Sky TBH , I defy anyone to say they cant see 'blockiness' when watching football on Freeview or Sky, Its all about bandwidth, more bandwidth - better PQ BUT squeeze more channels into the available bandwidth = more money............ IMHO the advent of digital TV is a wasted opportunity. Analogue for me is still way better PQ.

I don't watch sport, I can imagine football and rugby would look terrible on Freeview.

The problem with analogue is that it isn't in widescreen.

i think that problem is compounded, or maybe even largely due to, cheap STB's. The low cost LTB's you find everywhere arent low cost for nothing. With digital satellite there was much less pixelation and blockiness before they started adding truck loads of extra features into the software.

I cant get any digital channels where i live :( , or channel 5 on analogue TV and thats with a booster.

I cant resist posting a link to the article I always post when talking about HDTV/Digital.

The Great HDTV Swindle

Not only is that article depressing enough, look at how old it is and how little we've moved since :(

It's an interesting read anyway. Hopefully it wont be as bad over here with channels wanted to start up with HDTV.

It also explains how you can fit about 6 digital channels into the same spectrum (i think thats the right term) of 1 analogue channel. Hence why theyre gonna eventually get rid of analogue. More channels = more adverts = more money. :\

malfunkshun;

I'm not so sure, at the end of the day the MPEG2 decoder in an STB either follows the standard or it doesn't. No amount of clever post processing can get the detail back and remove the blocks.

I'd hope that the closer we get to switchover, the more Sky will do about 'multiroom'. The current situation of having to pay £10/month per extra card isn't really much use to us. £10/month for up to 5 extra cards would be more helpful.

We have 1 extra box... but when they turn it off, we'll have a few useless tvs. I'd rather have extra sky boxes than have to buy freeview.

I agree

I cant believe people cant see how bad the quality of Sky pictures are, I noticed this from the start. IMO we now have more expensive TV with less picture quality, how did that happen?......

Maybe once we have high capacity DVD's these will reproduce decent results, cant see the TV moguls providing a service that will do justice to the potential of digital transmission.

I get PERFECT analogue signal even digital

Freeview, no, just no, 2 different arials and 4 boxes

So what about those who can get **** all analogue signal at the moment
