Why buy a Rover?

A lot of folk have been jumping on the band wagon recently!! with the exception of a few ok cars (MG ZT, 220 Turbo) Rovers are a steaming pile of turd, noturiously unreliable and packed full of old technology.

You cant like the looks can you? some of the coupés are alright looking but nothing to put a tingle in my trousers came from Rover.

You didnt buy it for its reliability did you? 1.8 K series has to be the most unreliable engine ever due its high amount of HGF at 80k and all manner of other problems with the other engines.

Build quality? Surely not? my wife has a 2003 MG ZR and it has the same sloppy build quality of a mates 1995 214Si, they are pretty much identical cars, except for stick on tat they are identical cars. Wasnt this a car designed in the 1980;s?? im sure the design was bought from Toyota!! the ZS is a Civic Coupe isnt it? Body panels dont quite fit, the interior plastics are nastier than a nasty thing - i could go on all day tbh.

Price maybe? when you saw your bargain Rover, didnt you put on your common sense cap and ask why they are so cheap?

City Rover - my brothe in law in his infinite wisdom bought one of these steaming piles of crap, not sure what he paid for it but only got £2k when he sold it and it was less than a year old lol its what Rover owners deserve :p

I just dont see the appeal tbh, as much as i mock Mondeo's, its a million times better for the price if you want a cheap but loaded saloon!!

Ok..

You can say all that for a lot of car manufacturers, I think you're just trying to provoke Rover owners on the board.

:D Yey for the Rover threads. I think this forum is turning ;)

I like Rovers because of the bang for buck. All the gear you get for the price, and the fact that it's a Rover.

People think they're slow, grandad cars. I like proving them wrong. It's especially funny to see a chav in his Corsa 1.1 winding down his window when I just press the one-touch button and rest my arm on the door card.

Also, my dad has had 3 820's, I've had 2 214's and never had a spot of bother with any of them. If anyone brings up the whole 'it's cost you millions of pounds in parts' I'm going to scream. Really gets my back up when people slate a car when they haven't ever owned or don't know the full story.

Now, don't get me wrong, Rover are far from perfect, but they aren't as bad as everyone thinks.

Im not, i just dont see the appeal. Plenty of manufacturers out there have problematic cars, but they all sell new cars rathe than rehashed old designs!! im interested into knowing why people bought a Rover when its clearthey are pants :D

As a Rover owner myself i still cant see the appeal, my wife bought ours because it looked good and it was cheap  if i was after trouble id just go to speakers corner :D

Rover has a list of hatefull cars two main ones spring to mind

Metro

MGTF

I would rather have my leg ripped off and get beaten with the soggy end than own one of those, i've always been partial to the square shaped 200 series, never liked the bubble shaped ones.

75 aint a bad car and good value for money now.

I agree that rover made more lemons than good uns but not all rovers are bad imho.

One question to run along side this, does anyone know why the 1.8 K series was used in the Freelander? surely such a good company was able to pick a better engine than that?

Rover V8 is still a legend!!! id go for a ford over it though but its still an ace engine.

My mum used to have a Rover 218 turbo diesel something and I think the only good feature was that it was the loudest and most distinctive diesel noise in the world so I could tell if she was nearly home :) . Didn't mind it I guess but we had it for years and just started to appear very dated in comparison to other cars, just thankful that I have my own car now and very rarely have to go in her new car which is perhaps even worse....a daewoo matiz.. :(

Perhaps it was due to the Freelander being designed when they were still part of the Rover Group, thus having access to the engine?

In the main I agree. Rovers have never appealed to me, and yes my 'grandad' used to own a 214 on an H plate. It was quite comfortable and had very little go wrong with it and he had it from new, but I guess it was the way he drove it...

Rovers generally do not appeal to me. MGs dont appeal to me, having said that, I am seriously going to be looking to purchase a ZT in the next month or so all being well. The 75 'IMO' depicts a turning point in Rovers 'BMW' owned life. A very well built car and MG altered extensively to make it different from a standard 75. I saw a ZR today and just thought it looked pap! Crappy interior and literally stick on tat.

The only thing that really attracted me to the ZT over a hot hatch was its motorway cruiseability (and it can handle the B road stuff), plus its price! A full on executive saloon for a shade under £6k only 2 1/2 years old and 33k on the clock! Absolute Bargain!

In general, I am of the srong opinion that Rovers (and possibly MGs) suck..however, i'm prepared to put my money where my mouth is and own a ZT and see what happens. I should be ok though as the engine is BMW built!!! :p

The ZS will probably be my next car, subject to test drive etc. The V6 doesnt have the headgasket issues and for the money you get a very new low mileage car.

I agree some Rovers hold very little appeal. The 1.8VVC is a good engine though, shame the normal 1.8 has the headgasket problems, but it is still a popular tuners engine as it responds so well to tuning.

When the mk2 200 and 400 came out in 1990 they were very good cars - a much more "special" alternative - look at the competition - the 1.4 Escort was very very gutless, even the 1.6 feels a lot slower than the 414.
The equivalent Astra 1.4 was an 8v and was far behind in terms of, well, everything.

I have a Rover 620Ti... 2.0l Turbo, 200BHP got it Feb 2005 for £1600. It's an S reg in excellent condition.

Its fast. I like the look of it.

Not all Rovers had the K series engine in them. IMO the T Series engine is very strong... Ask all the kit car people using them :)

I thought the v6 engine in a ZT/75 was a Rover KV6.

You timed that picture nicely jp ;)

Nice car. I see you have the lip spoiler, looks good :) Just needs lowering, colour coded mudflaps and clear indicators.

rovers a good cars, well some of them. I dont drive but my dad and brother have had rovers for ages now, started with a 214, then quite a few 214 and 216's, solid cars, good honda engines, and they are quite fast as well, the current 216 my brother has was only £200, J reg, honda engine, has had a light amount of mods done to it and it looks and feels the business

If Rover hadnt gone to the naff car hall of shame in the sky (j/k) and were still making these good reliable cars (j/k) where do you fans reckon they would have been in 5 and 10 years time?

5 years time - a brand new small hatch - oh wait its just the same old rover with yet another face lift?

10 years time - an MG ZS mk 4- oh wait its the same as the mk1 but face lifted to high heaven :D

I reckon they would have ditched the 1.8 k series in favour of a more reliable engine, but tbh i cant see new cars :)

But out doing a 1.1 Corsa is hardly competition. :p
