Why buy a Rover?

My parents had a Rover Coupe for a few years a little while back. Never drove it myself obviously, but it seemed solid, never had any problems, and seemed very quick.

Looked like this one, but was charcoal grey:

Popularity doesnt make a good car though, you see hundreds of Corsa's, Astra's and Vectra's on the road. They are pants compared to the competition imo, its 4 years 0% finance and a years free insurance that sell those - not the fact they are great cars.

If they were that good, they wouldnt have to offer such great deals on them would they? Rover where the same.

The Astra - both previous and current generations - have proven themselves to be very reliable, capable cars (the fact that so many police forces use them should be an indicator to that). The current Vectra is the same. The Corsa suffers a bit because it's based on the original Corsa design so it's aging.

Im not saying there not, im saying they have nothing on the competition. The Focus is miles better than an Astra. Greater Manchester Police use Astra's because they get a big discount and a 3 year unlimited mileage warrenty. Im sure they would use someone like Proton if they offer a better deal :p

Have to say. I've been through 3 rover turbo's (3 engines in 2 cars) and only suffered 1 HG bork. In turn the engine got cooked and i had to have it replaced. But hey, it was my fault for driving at 130+ (on my private test track) with no water..

Overall i think that no, they arent the best motors in the world, but bang for buck they really are good :).

First you ask why people buy them, surely there must have been a reason 10 years ago and at the time they WERE popular are WERE NOT pants.

Really you just want to argue that you think Rovers are crap for some reason, Why? Boring day at work or something?

As for the future if Rover were still around: They had new designs ready to start, but not enough money for the tooling required.

Rovers are fantastic cars within context.

Some of the latest MG's were of fantastic build quality, and the 220 Coupe Turbo is a sheer beast, being quicker than an Impreza turbo 30-50 (or 50-70, cant remember).

Having been reading for a LONG time now the utter utter tripe talked by "keyboard experts" like fox about Rovers, I had to join just to set the record straight.

The early 90's cars are just that:- Early 90's cars, just as crap as most other early 90's cars. Apart from the 220 turbo's, which embarass most people on the road!

OK so a lot of them had problems, the same as any other cars from that era.

As for the 800 Vitesse's they are awesome value for money, and are very rapid, and have all the toys as well as full leather for pennies compared to anything else you can buy. So the value is second to none.

I deliberated for a LONG time about which performance car to get, and the Rover was by far the best choice, as its not got the stigma of an Impreza, nor does it have the running costs of anything as fast as it.

Furthermore, the coupe turbo is one of the handful of cars with a Targa roof, another unique point.

So to summarise, the 800 Vitesse and the coupe were among the finest cars made for the money for that era, and present even better value these days, as you can drive a scoob beater for under £2500.

so to all misguided Rover slaggers, please know what you are talking about before showing us how little you actually know!!

Read over my posts, when people have said they bought for bang for buck and other reasons i havent said anything. Surely if i was after trouble i would have said something then? i would have said they aint getting bang for buck, its a fair point and ive taken it on board.

I only pulled up the point in you saying they must be good because they sold so well is utter crap. Offer them cheap enough or give a good deal and people are gunna snap them up, that doesnt make them a good car, it makes a good deal. Even when raising this point i havent said Rovers are crap. I said that in my opening post. there are exceptions to the rule though.

Kia are currently offering 5 years unlimited mile warrentie's and are selling more cars in the UK than they ever have. Does this mean their cars have suddenly become good?

Sounds like they must be ok for 5 years at least or the company wont be around that long.

Even if Rover had been perfect it would have gone under most likely, lots of companies have had to merge to stay alive recently and Rover did the opposite.

As a side note, just been to Rover to pick those strut bolts up... and they didn't order them in

I hope to god they're here for Sunday.

TheVoice, that is one sexy coupe! Love those wheels. And heh, I'm getting a GSi in charcoal.
