Why can't I get into these new MMO's?

I've tried, god knows I've tried, but I just end up quitting after 1-2 weeks of playing...

I've only ever played and stuck to two MMO's;

Ultima Online - 5+ years
Planetside - 5+ years

Maybe my problem is that I can't get my head around, or maybe refuse to get my head around the fact that these new MMO's require me to spend mass amounts of time ingame just to be able to compete in a PvP environment?

Maybe it's the fact that no other MMO has the same mechanics of that Ultima Online once had in its prime?

Or the fact that these new MMO's require you to group and be able to only do one role within that group?

What ever happened to 1v1's? 2v1's? Hell in UO you could have 8v2 and still come out on top, what about if I fancied solo'ing which is pretty much non existent nowadays or if I wanted to do some griefing? What happened to those days, what's happened to skill based games?

Think I need to let go of my past gaming and look to the future, but as far as I'm concered, UO was the best MMO ever released.

Had to get it out of my system! :(

Probably because it sounds like you grew up in UO. If that is the case then every other MMO is pretty generic and a grindfest to you. You pretty much know the score with all of todays dumbed down MMO's so you simply cba.

I too grew up in UO and every other MMO is just a poor imitation of Dark Age of Camelot to me, which was the game I moved to after Age of Shadows hit UO. UO and Daoc stand in my books as the best MMO's around in their heyday. I still ponder returning to UO, except I know Europa is nothing but a ghost shard by now compared to it during UO:R.

Most recent MMO's seem to be heading away from enforced grouping as far as I can tell except for specific high end content as they are trying to attract the casual/solo player who likes to group from time to time. Lotro for example can be pretty much solo'd all the way through, a common complaint made for WoW (which I've never played).

Which games have you played recently, because a lot of MMO's tend to see dramatic changes from launch, EQ2 for example.

You might like Ragnarok Online, gameplay is based more on action/smart thinking/positioning and less on equipment/manpower/standing in one spot and mashing buttons whenever the global cooldown ends.

Never played UO personally though so I don't know how the game mechanics compare.

You should check out fallen earth its an indie title but i heard it has a lot of similarities with uo, one open world server, try the free trial out.
If you like crafting then u should love this game.
also it has pvp like as in town v town :)
