Why do I feel like the only one left on XP?

I use a lot of different machines. I found it to be a common trait, regardless if it was a factory install or someone had installed it themselves.

I can see how you'd get the odd pause if you had a lower end machine like mine (see 5 posts up) - and let vista run with default settings. Windows defender, system restore, indexing etc will all happily bog a system down. Oh, and pre SP1 systems will be even more prone to it. Mine runs just fine and its a pretty mediocre system tbh.

Many non-power users or people who've never used a different OS won't even be aware of any of this though, they'll just see it as the way things are. In fact they'll probably go and install another 3 "security" applications on top. Naive is the word....

;)

My thinking is that in this day an age an OS should work well out of the box without the user being a "power user". I don't think the users are naive, they just have no interest in tinkering under the hood. Which I think is perfectly valid. They don't want to play with the computer, but to use it. Fundamental difference between Apple and Microsoft thinking. TBH I'm getting more like that. I don't want to be overlocking, and tweaking anymore. I'm busy enough just getting work done.

apparently so, and i think vista is getting there, and thats one of the reasons i dont like it..

1) simple OS which just works without hours of configuring settings with a nice looking GUI and made with menu's for the people who dont know what they are doing to be able to figure it out.

2) more efficient, very logical OS which has menu's made by logic and has insane detail in the config, while being more efficient and more configureable, the navigation is more complicated and normal users wouldnt be able to figure it out without help

id pick option 2 every time

if i want it to look nice id download a 3rd party program and apply my own skins

i dual boot between XP x64 and Vista Ultimate x64.

i find myself using XP 90% of the time because whenever i try vista, it does something odd (like shutting down HTTP traffic!) causing me to boot to XP instead.
honestly, i've found no appreciable benefit to using Vista over 64-bit XP.

If you buy a PC from a large OEM then that's pretty much the case.

Oh I dunno, I got a Dell laptop and the amount of OEM crud on there was unreal. I spent a couple of hours uninstalling crap like Mcaffee Security etc, applying updates, and tweaking vista. Yes, I think theres a lot to be said for tweaking indexing options, services, UAC etc and getting shut of system restore, windows defender etc.

Out of the box, Vista wants to hold my hand all day long. I can do without that from an OS.

But that's not what you quoted me saying. I was responding to whether Vista works out of the box without having to doobscure tweaks orfind obscure drivers, which it does from a large OEM.

Whether you want all of Vista's features and the OEM addons is irrelevant ;)

So use linux instead. It fits what you want perfectly.

Agreed. If you want to configure something with confusing dialogs use Linux! If you want a fairly "simple" configuration, use Windows.

I am also still on xp :D

If it works leave it alone lol

Totally agree. If you have the grunt to run Vista then it might be worth getting it, but no-one is forcing you to!

I have a few friends in the US that still run Windows 2K.

I actually said works well out of the box. Not that it simply works. ;)

Out of the box its sloooow.

In your opinion, or do you have anything to back that up?

Aside from turning off Defender and putting UAC into quiet mode, I've not done anything to my machine, my work laptop and my wifes laptop and they're fast, secure and my desktop can see all 4gb of my ram.

I actually dual booted my work laptop with XP to see if it was any faster (we're beginning to use Team Foundation Database and opening projects is slow - I wanted to see if it was faster in XP because it's only got 2gb ram), and after installing Vista I haven't used XP because I don't feel its any faster at all.

Disagree. Upgraded some of the PC's at work to Vista as we're in the testing cycle now before implementation and they work very well. It takes a little getting used to but it's very quick and very, very stable.

Still on XP 32 SP3 on our home PC and laptop, the second home laptop has Vista on it but only cause it came with it installed. I was seriously tempted to install Vista on my home PC after my son managed to get it Virus/Trojan infected but a few hours of tearing what little hair I have left and managed to recover it so left it running XP SP3.

I've got no feelings either way on XP or Vista to be honest. Didn't like Vista much when the laptop arrived with it but it's manily used for internet browsing with FF so don't use many if any of Vistas features per-se.

Desktop PC -> XP
Netbook -> XP
Work PC -> XP (upgraded from Win 2000 about 6 months ago!)

Do I win a prize? :p
