Why do I have to install through Steam?

When I got home from school today, I tried to install Modern Warfare 2 (PC version) onto my computer. :D

My PC can definitely run the game on recommended requirements.

But it seems that I have to install this game through Steam. Why? No other Call of Duty game has to be installed through Steam, it didn't give me an option not to install through Steam...So I look in the manual, but find no installation instructions. :confused:

When it is preparing the game for installing, an error comes up saying that the 'server is too busy'. This was at about 6PM, so I went to Air Cadets and returned at 10PM to find that the servers were still too busy...

Wouldn't it be so much easier just to install the game normally from the disk...If there is a way to do so, please tell me as it would make me very happy. :)

It requires Steam but should be able to install from disc.

Keep trying is about the best you can do until it starts to install using it, it will work eventually.

There are a few problems with Steam seemingly getting confused and trying to download when it shouldn't but if you keep at it you should get there eventually.
 
Steam is very good but you have to bear in mind that as the game has recently been released the servers will be under very high load. Just have a little patience and I'm sure it will get working eventually.
 
Took me ages to install mine as the server was unable to cope with all the traffic, it installed from the disc but needed to connect to steam first.

Your not old enough to play it anyway OP so it's just as well it didn't work ;)
 
u have to enter cd key in steam as well , so u cant install game without internet connection.

<3 steam game works fine for me
 
Worked fine for me about 3pm yesterday. Installs from disk and did 30 seconds of patching after that. But damnnnnnn, the install took 30 minutes or something. Longest install evar.

I think Gears of War or maybe GTA4 took even longer than this for me but yeah, that is a long time for an install.

yes and u can play straight away dont need to wait for steam launch date.

i got it yesterday and managed to complete single player already and multiplayers works as well
 
Welcome to the future, where all physical retail games have Steamworks (i.e. require install via Steam).

When that future arrives, it'll be indie-only PC gaming for me.
 
I really cannot understand why Anybody would buy the PC version of this game. :confused:
Personally I'm Boycotting it. :D

Are you buying a console version though and basically just compounding the issues with the PC version by making it even more obvious to Activision all the money is in consoles and they can treat PC gamers like **** and it won't affect their bottom line? :p

No of course not, I don't/can't/won't play FPS on console, Period.
I clanned Original COD & play FPS on PC, Activision won't get none of my money the Traitors !!! :mad:
 
Good good, just the way you first said 'pc version' rather than 'this game' made me worry you may have bought the console version. :p
 
It is compulsory to be linked through steam its done automatically where ever you purchase from as Steam is its main system to connect everyone together and help to prevent piracy/cheating

No I am just being kind to the friends I know who have bought this on Console. I have to see them later on Live you see. :D
