Why do people flash when you overtake

Sometimes I think it's the people who won't overtake who are more annoying. I've been in the hotrod on some lanes before and frankly I can't see a thing, 30's style lights look great but are rubbish so progress can be slow. So I get a normal car behind me and as it can go faster I travel a bit slower and keep over so they can overtake. Except they don't. I now can't see anything because they are too close behind me and are lighting the inside of the car up and the reflection is blinding me. So I am forced to go slower. Got down to about 20mph once in a 60 zone and this guy wouldn't go round me. I was so blinded by his lights I had to go to almost a stop before he would go round me. Duh.
Happens to me quite frequently too. I think the earlier posters are right, its normally being being woken up and startled. It also sometimes happens when having some fun with another car, if they lose they take it rather badly and flash you - example:
Duel carrageway leading to a roundabout where you can go straight on in both lanes. I was in the outside, guy in a golf TDI was in the inside lane. When coming off the roundabout he floored it, as did I. I got a massive lead so he had to pull in behind me when his lane turned into a bus lane. He went mental and flashed his lights. When we stopped at the next roundabout he started shouting at me. I just blew him a kiss and drove off. If he had pulled ahead of me he would have been in the wrong by undertaking.
Anyway, rant over.
Jonny69, it also really gets me when people overtake in the mornings where it gets you nowhere.

I know HGV drivers do it for overtaking, letting the other driver know it's safe to pull in.

This really gets my goat!
They are spoiling you ride/drive by doing 30-40 in a 60 limit where it is perfectly safe to do at least the limit! then they flash you when you do a perfectly legal and polite overtaking manouver. No Idea why they do it, but its annoying to say the least.
Even worse is when someone coming the other way does it, when I had enough room to overtake 3 or 4 times before he/she got there!!

Although a carrera 4S made me have to turn the wick up once, she was doing 40 on a nice A-road, so I went past her on the bike at a reasonable pace, she suddenly went into race mode or something!!
quite funny, women who have no idea how fast bikes are, and think the car their rich boyfriend got them is the fastest thing in the world, then they brake down to about 20mph to take the next lovely sweeping corner!

I am a bike fan but mate a car can go round a bend loads faster than a bike.The only way a bike beats a car is in power to weight ration which gives it Excellent acceleration compared to Most cars.
Unless in traffic a car is a Lot faster than a bike round bends.

I think our biker was talking about the ladies ability to take corners over the ability of the bike to loose the C4S in the bends, and I am not even going down the car/bike route after 20 odd pages on Pistonheads!
