Why do people hide their number plates?

tbh, I thought the title was going to refer to the recent trend of tinted/smoked number plates, to try and hide the reg from cameras/eyes. How on earth do they get away with them?
Not enough coppers on the roads, same reason you see so many people still using mobiles.

my dads car got cloned a few years back . Got a call from police to says his car had been crashed opposite end of the country when it was still on the drive. Trade vehicle had pulled up outside a week earlier and a bloke got out and walked onto the drive then got back in his van and drove away . Just managed to spot him while i was shutting the curtains by the time i got outside to ask what he was doing he was gone. Dont know why they dont trawl the internet for a reg instead

Been a victim of this myself, with the Forester. Someone had cloned its reg from the previous owner's classified ad - and then proceeded to drive across the Dartford crossing on a regular basis, landing me with no end of spurious fines.

That all got sorted out (the toll staff were very prompt, in that respect), but it did culminate in the police turning up at my door one day - as the same cloned Forester had also been seen in the same area as a series of robberies that had taken place. Fortunately, they too were very understanding and helpful.

So, I can totally understand why people do it! :)

Can understand why people do it in general pictures but find it really frustrating when people don't how the reg number in for sale ads. Especially dealerships when they replace the plates with their own name. Just puts me off even bothering to enquire about it. I wanna check the mot history and whatever before I travel to see it!

I don't have location data on my pictures but if someone wants to clone my plate to put on their R8 V10 plus then fill your boots.

Who here has actually had their plate cloned as a result of having it posted online?

I'm betting nobody.

The amusing ones are the ones that leave the year marker in the reg but blank everything else :p

More fool the person cloning plates to put on another Bronze MX5 if you ask me :p

There's enough subtle differences that will set mine apart if such a thing did ever happen

I spotted a bronze modified Mx5 that I thought was yours the other day in Northampton, but the reg was different. :p

The irony had someone been running around on my plates with me unknowing :p`Mine isn't particularly modified looking though.

Always forget how many OCUKers are so local

I don't know why someone wanting to do some crime needs to clone a plate from the same kind of car. They could stick any old plate on it since it's all checked by automated systems now. The chances of a cop checking it are very slim.
