why do people spend 100s modding crap cars?

Why look down at people who modify Corsa's etc.

They wouldn't do it if they weren't car enthusiasts JUST LIKE YOU.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

Most of them love cars/driving/motorsport as much as anyone who buys a 911 turbo, just cannot afford one.

What's it to any of you what people do with their cars?

the point is people who spend literally thousands on parts that improve the car in no way at all, it end up either looking like an early communist attempt at a space craft, a snow plow or someone drove through halfrauds covered in super glue

if someone uses real mechanical knowledge and improves the ride, handling and power of their car then I have no issue with it

its nothing to do with value or age of the car, a brand new 56 plate corsa can be branded with the same label as a nova, if its attacked tastelessly with nasty body kits etc

me I'd rather stick with my stock polo till I can afford something that I really want

Totally agree, my sisters bf modded his newish corsa he spent an absolute fortune on it we are taking thousands here and if anything it is more usless and unuseable as it was standard. Needless to say he regrets it and has learned the error of his ways.

A max powered corsa is just plain bad taste, I don't care what people say about differing tastes. I see it like sandles and socks, wear them if you want I don't care, but you are being universally wrong.

no worse doing this than taking a 520i and making it look like an M5..

At least these people are trying to do something individual..

Years ago hot rodders didnt have off the shelf bits like we do, but had they been available they would have used them...

For me, modding cars would be about performance (engine and chassis) first, visuals second, but these people want otherwise..

;)

People buy cheap cars and spend £100's on them for the same reason as people buy the cheapest house on the best road and do them up gradually.

You make the best of what you have and do 'it' up to suit your own tastes.

Remember being 17? The car is more than transport to get from A to B! Its your own space, independence and away from the family. So for some young person to personalise it, pffft I dont look down on him/her.

or on another perspective, a cheap car makes the perfect sleeper and is loads of fun. Nothing like blasting away newer cars with an old metro or the like.

people have hobbies... some of these involve modding cars.

people like this are in the most part original and push the boundaries giving us the nice looking cars now by making mistakes and learning.

ive modded every car ive had to some extent, and so have my mates. all are individual, some are nasty, some arent. but at the end of the day they all attract attention and usually an opinion which is what they are after.

:)

eg my XR2 could set car alarms off with the rally exhaust, and on many occasions got asked for a magazine feature due to its speed.... god knows how a stock engined 1600 CVH got to 145 on the clocks, but it did! and it nearly did a 150bhp RST from the off. lack of slip diff stopped me as it didnt stop spinning until 3rd gear.

if every car was the same what a boring world it would be....

Which looks like an M5 as standard, next dig in line please..

Geez I hadn't even posted in this thread and still they keep coming :p

Looks like an M5 to an un-trained eye. ;)

I only aim at open goals. :p

No, people buy cheap houses and do them up as an investment. They're adding value to a property, whereas the young modding crew won't ever see any of their money spent back.

It's all relative, if you have an interest in making your car "better" in your eyes, then you will modify your car no matter what it is.
For example if I owned a 1.1 Fiesta, and when I went to buy tyres, it was actually cheaper to get some second hand alloys with good tyres fitted to them, I would do that, it improves looks, and you have some better tyres.
I can understand tasteful mods like this, however, I will never understand why someone thinks their car looks better like this I will never know:

LOL you mean they THINK they are adding value, once again, the things most people do to their houses dont add any value whatsoever...

Modding cars is about individuality, I was doing it with my Ford Anglia, Capri etc etc 20 years ago... they were no better than the cars that get modded these days...

Now what I would ask is why put more electronics than a small dixons store in the car... ala Pimp my Ride... most of them are just ridiculous..

:D

the difference is hot rodding was/still is done to make it quicker, faster, lighter etc

on coupes the roof gets chopped - reduces weight, lowers centre of mavity, reduces frontal aero therefore reduces drag
channel the body - gets the centre of mavity down even more
lower the whole suspension, fit suicide front axles/dropped spindles/dropped axles - lowers centre of mavity again and improves handling
different axles, gearboxes, engines, brakes etc were all done to improve the car

yea aesthetics are important too but you dont see a '32 Ford hot rod with bodykits, ICE, neons, massive 'bling rims' and other assorted **** all over it

i can understand why people change things on their car, but cannot understand why youd want to change something that did not improve how the car went in one way or another.

led lights... what do they acheive?

It's obviously not to everyone's taste. I certainly think that Corsa's with plastic bat-mobile style bodywork and L.E.D wiper jets looks crap. However there are some people out there who think it looks good.

It's just a hobby for some people and they enjoy doing it to show off to the other people who enjoy doing it.

People stick L.E.Ds all over their computers, cut holes in the cases and lots of other pointless modifications, not to impress the people who aren't in to that stuff, but to impress the people who are into the exact same thing as them. Just a hobby.

As long as the modifications are legal and road worthy, I don't see them as a problem. It's only when they replace their headlights with blue ones etc do I want to go over and rip the tack off it.

As much as I hate them, I understand it.

I mean, ive resorted to smoked side repeaters, home made heat shields, red calipers, extra dials in the car, new interior, exhaust, induction etc etc

While its not a nova, its still mine... so I can understand it, if at the same time, hate the actual result for others.
