Why do people spit ?

My youngest son (11) went through a stage of spitting when he was playing for his local team, he more than likely picked up on the habit from watching football on T.V. None of his teammates did it, and I was embarrassed for him and myself.

A few words at half time one sunday and he doesn't do it anymore.

It's disgusting and there is no need for it. Hate seeing football players gobbing all over the place too.
