Why do people whistle, do they think it's a show of talent?

Why? Habit and enjoyment. I seriously doubt someone is trying to show off with whistling. I like whistling when no one is around from time to time (although I'm crap), and enjoying humming. Perhaps you need to express yourself more?

I can't stand the sound of my mother eat muesli, drives me up the wall it just sounds so disgusting. She's not doing it intentionally or trying to get people to look at her however.

I understand that people can find it irritating, but...

..this is bizarre.

*And probably deserving of a mod edit for his naughty word*

Would never have thought that something as trivial as whistling would cause such anger with people :o

Had some guy singing very loud on the bus yesturday in what can be described as broken English, no idea what the song was lol.

I like to whistle now and again because I like the sound it makes.

However, I won't tend to do it in the middle of a public place.

I actually agree with the OP - it really grates me when I'm in the gym changing rooms at sparrow fart in the morning and someone is merrily whistling for the reasons stated.

Reading the misophonia wiki has been enlightening

Other sounds that grate me:
loud keyboard typing, snoring, humming, anything other than recordable singing

And I'm not a miserable sod!

OP is jealous he is not a skilled whistler. I quite enjoy powering out a trill at max volume.
I also sing, i'm sure my neighbours love it.

I don't understand this, I never have. There's a guy downstairs at work whistling a tune ad nauseam. It's excrutiatingly annoying. What I don't understand is why people do this in public. Do they think, "I'm talented and people will benefit from this sound" or do they think, "everyone should know how happy I am" or "people will be impressed by this"?

Because no-one is. No-one whistling has ever done anything but increased their chances of being punched in the mouth.

Do you whistle or do you know people who do?

I agree with you. There's someone on my street who whistles ******* loudly. It's so loud I can hear it every time he leaves his house. I now know his daily routine due to his whistling. I hate him. I hate whistlers.

It's ******* ignorant and obnoxious.
