Why Do So Many People Hate songs that are clearly good?

Well theres a line really. On one side is what you are implying there, the other is saying that the spice girls have more depth and meaning than any other musical group / band in the world.

I'm not saying that is true in the Eminem case, but I wouldn't go round saying 'master of puppets is a rubbish song' because I know it simply isn't, yet I don't choose to listen to that music. The same said for 'stairway to heaven', or even 'sweet child o' mine'.

im not sure what you're trying to say here. it sounds like you're agreeing with me, but phrasing it like you only half agree! some people might prefer the spice girls to whatever bands you like...that doesnt make either of you wrong.

Theres no such thing as good or bad music.

Only music you like, and music you dislike.

Don't like James Blunt at all, i'd rather be beaten around the face with a fish for an hour than listed to his album.

At the end of the day people like what they like, couldn't care less what anyone else thinks of the music i like, however i am of the firm belief that at times peoples oppinions on music are plain wrong.

Like when someone tried to tell me that feeder are more tallented than Led Zeppelin, or that Jimmy eat world were technically superior to the Smashing pumpkins, or my personal favourite that people like james blunt and coldplay are more musically tallented than Tchaikovsky. I have no beef people prefering anyone over anyone else but smetimes oppinions are wrong, i'm not one of these people who believes that all oppinions are equal and valid.

I accept that although Metal is may favourite genre of music that there are musicians as tallented an more-so than my favourite metal bands, and that the great classical composers basically wipe the floor with everyone.

Worryingly they did :( and then they got upset when i told them that they were just wrong.

Agree with you mate. I like good bye my lover infact i quite like the whole James Blunt album although tracks 1-4 and 10 stand out way above the rest. A lot of people regard them selves as music fans but what they really mean is they like either rock R&B etc etc. I have a very varied CD collection i pick things that i think have good musical value. Take Delta Goodrems Born to Try not the best song but her vocal talent is top notch.

What sense does it make to sort or rate music based on technical ability?

Some of the best music/songs are butally simple.

In terms of preference, none, which is why i much prefer Metal to Classical, despite Classical being hugely technically superior. But i have found few pieces of any modern music that have the sheer power of any classical music, Mozarts Death Requiem is a stunningly beautiful piece of music.

A huge test of music is the test of time, how many of todays artists will be remembered in 200 years time ? I bet people will still be listening to Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner, Tchaikovsky etc, etc.

I dont understand how the words "James Blunt" and the phrase "clearly good" can even be thought with the same brain, let alone mentioned in the same sentence.

Have you not read the rest of this thread...

They can be thought by the same brain, the brain of someone who likes James Blunt. It is possible that someone out there does like him you know.

two points, A) a sense of humour is occasionally required on these boards, go forth and aquire one :p
B) doesn't make it any more understandable though does it ? :p

Someone I know has said that The Killers are better than Zeppelin. LOL.

And who's to tell him they aren't?
Both my teenage daughters would definitely say The Killers are better than Zeppelin and to their ears they are.
I saw Zeppelin 4 times so I know who I'd choose - but thats my preference.

And to the OP -
Who defines what is 'clearly good'?
I gave the James Blunt album a chance last thursday and I'd had enough after 5 songs (I lasted that long) before I wanted to slit my wrists.
