Why do you indicate ?

When I indicate, it's prior. If there's no traffic around then I don't bother. why indicate, when no one can use that info. The area I could improve is roundabout exits. Usually indicate before the roundabout. But not often for the exit, either the roundabouts to small or I'm going to fast. Unless im stuck in traffic, then I'm pretty good.

The way I was taught it is: you indicate to other road users who may be affected by your maneuvre that you intend to do something which might affect them. And yes, I know that sounds a little circular. But that's why it's mirror, signal, maneuvre, not maneuvre and maybe signal later if you're lucky. And that's also why I usually don't indicate before I change lanes left - the vehicle behind me is presumably traveling slower than me ad thus won't be affected.

As for people who use indicators to try to force right-of-way (pace InvaderGIR) - I had some idiot in an Evo try this and then go mental when I carried on with my overtake (he indicated when I was about twenty feet behind him and going at least ten miles an hour faster). Bl**dy Japanese rally **** drivers...

On a motorway/dual carriageway dad always moves the indicator stalk with the wheel when he changes lanes. It always annoys me.

but if you was to indicate the other driver would have an idea when you are going to move back over
and as you said "presumably" doesn't mean he will carry on going slower than you (BMW drivers any one?) ;)

Does anyone other then me indicate left when pulling back in to the slow lane or is it just me? My dad is always telling me I dont need to bother with the signal!

Of course you should indicate! You might have some twit trying to undertake you on a motorbike or something, and indicating could be the one thing that stops him trying to undertake you :p You can never indicate too much really, as long as you're doing it properly.

I was (coincidentally not deliberately) following a driver who was indicating left to go forwards at roundabouts - complete fool! That could so easily have caused someone to pull out in front of her thinking she's turning off.

Doesn't beat the encounter I had, which was basically "I'm indicating, therefore even though you are overtaking me, I have right of way and will pull out, and you will slow down and let me out." - Said bloke didn't understand why I carried on overtaking him, he almost tried to ram me off the road. :)

I had previously indicated giving plenty of time, and was overtaking him and a few other people.

I always indicate before I do something, unless the road is pretty much empty, then it can be as I'm doing it.

had a similar one on a welsh A-road, except the woman actually kept moving over and pushed me over onto the verge. scariest moment ever, that was. and what did the ultra-retarded stupid woman's passenger bloke say? "i heard the indicator going so she'd already started moving over so you was wrong" yeah wrong to already be overtaking and alongside by the time you start to indicate and move over at the same time... riiiiiiight.

oh and, as for indicating when pulling back to the left, i always do if the left maneuvre isn't mandatory, don't usually if it is. that is, if i'm overtaking in the oncoming traffic lane, i hardly intend to stay there, so don't feel it's needed to indicate that i'm coming back over. on motorways and such i tend to, just to make it clearer to everyone what i'm doing.

Seems like its not just me that has a problem with this then :)

On my way into work I always have to put up with people switching lane MID-ROUNDABOUT !!! :(

The middle lane is technically the correct one to be in for where I want to go, but the right lane also goes the same way and is 99% of the time clearer.
People then accelerate hard and then nip back in to the left.
Me not being in a hurry always takes the middle lane and you can always (and I mean always) tell who's using the right lane to overtake.
And a couple of times I've had people actually trying to merge with me half way around the roundabout.

Christ are they in that much of a hurry to get to work/die ??

I normally find women never indicate, I'm guessing it's a bit too complicated for them as opposed to taxi drivers who it's rumoured have to remove all methods of alerting traffic* as to their intentions prior to getting the job.

*They also have to poke themselves in both eyes before going out on the road, just so they have an excuse when they completely ignore other road users.
