Why do you play games?

Fun, sometimes a challenge but brain dead fun mainly.

What sorts of games specifically are you referring to for braindead fun? Because I'm finding some games, perhaps as I get older, are more like homework, having to learn oodles of mechanics and nuances to play them properly. Management games mostly, like Cities: Skylines. Which, hilariously, some people reckon the management side of it is a bit shallow, but I find there are too many behind the scenes rules that are too opaque to understand without trawling through guides and videos to master properly.

I'm sure we all have our games that we know inside out that we can fire up for an hour or two and just slip our brain into neutral...

Pretty much everything that's already been said.
Escapism. A chance to be someone/do something I wouldn't have a chance to do in RL, whether that's landing a 747 at LAX, driving a 10,000 tonne freight train through the Rockies, being a general badbotty in GTA, military combat with no consequences.
Creative, too as I attempt to design route add-ons for the various train sims which also branches out into 3D model creation and artwork for texturing.

More entertaining than much of what's on TV or any movies especially where the game encourages dynamic thinking or consequences for your actions. I get to be Commander Shepard or Adam Jensen...

All good stuff and I see myself playing games up to the point where my hands are too numb or arthritic to use the KBM or my eyes too shot to see the screen.

Why do people read books?
Why do people watch TV?
Why do people play with model trains?
Why do people listen to music?

I like to escape into another world, just to wind down really to get away from the copious amount of stupid people I see and hear on a daily basis. Plus, it gets me away from dealing with stupid TV, catered towards the dumb society we live in today....I mean Gogglebox really WTF!!!:mad::mad:
I was watching Stewart Lee yesterday evening and it made me chuckle when he was saying that this is the first point in history where if I person reads all of the literature that is released in their lifetime, they'll actually be less intelligent than if they hadn't read anything at all :p:(

To pwn noobs. Is there any other reason?!

HEADSHOT!

I play for many of the reasons already mentioned, but a big thing for me is the challenge. I tend to play all games on the hardest difficulty possible from the start and will more often than not have a second play-through if there's an unlocked 'extreme' difficulty option. I likely take twice as long to complete games than most - and possibly have a few more grey hairs - but it's the sense of accomplishment on beating the game (or noobs) that does it for me, more than anything.

Like soooooo many others have said:

Fun/escapism/boredom relief/engrossing/stress relief/and anything else I can think of that has justified gaming for well over 30 years :D

I guess I just like them. They've also gotten to a point now where the quality has shot up.

End of story really. There seems to be so much stigma surrounding games (less so these days).

Games are waste of time, games are addictive, be an adult yada yada.

Like somehow everything everyone else does is productive like watching pointless TV.

As everyone else, escapism, fun etc.
However I think part of what makes them addictive is it's so easy to get that sense of achievement and satisfaction, compared to a lot of other hobbies and even real life.
That instant hit of success is very appealing, and shouldn't be underestimated.

Great thread! Was talking to a friend about this the other day.

I struggle with quite severe and debilitating anxiety at times. Games really are a wonderful way to help combat the attacks I used to have frequently.

It's not just playing them either. It's very easy to be a cynic of the medium, especially if you're a part of it, but the community is more often then not really quite cool. Endlessly passionate and incredibly excitable. Being surrounded by people who actively adore the same thing you do is a great way to take your mind of ****.

Not too mention the fact that games are more increasingly becoming excellent ways to tell great stories.
