Why do you play games?

Fun – I like fun and games are some of the most reliable, weather-independent fun you can have. Technology-wise it’s a very exciting time to be gaming with VR etc. as we near photo-realism in games.

Escapism – when I used to have a very stressful job, an immersive game was great for totally taking you out of that.

Very interesting. (personally-speaking and gf is a psychologist) Do you find the social aspect of gaming helps matters? Do you get involved in voice comms, or do you mean on forums etc?

Yeah very much so. A lot of my friends are quite big gamers and I've made quite a few new ones as a result of actually getting involved in conversations online in game, on forums etc.

For the stories and exploration. Life is, lets face it, quite mundane. So the stories in games/movies/books/TV is the nice spice. And games are the best, especially ones with interactive stories.

I couldn't even tell you now, I don't find singleplayer games enjoyable and the communites in multiplayer games just seem to be getting worse, I've made an effort this year to cut my time down a bit and focus on things that matter and should pay off in the boring "real world".

Agree with the other posts about fun and escapism, but I also like the professional eSports scene which turns a game into a "sport" where I can root for someone/team and also enjoy the skill that I can aspire to.

I guess I just like them. They've also gotten to a point now where the quality has shot up.

End of story really. There seems to be so much stigma surrounding games (less so these days).

Games are waste of time, games are addictive, be an adult yada yada.

Like somehow everything everyone else does is productive like watching pointless TV.

Yeah I always chuckle (and sigh to myself) when I hear people who watch TV, movies, read fiction, do crosswords/puzzles, play board games (ie backgammon, chess, etc) or cards, and so on, complain that games are a waste of time.

It's simply hypocrisy born of ignorance.

Games do exactly the same thing as all those other activities put together - provide escapism, challenge for the brain and so on.

And then there's those who play things like candy crush and similar... "highly stimulating and deep "games"" who have the audacity to complain about people "wasting time" on things like... I dunno, Deus Ex or something. You know, like it's acceptable to play Tetris on public transport, but it's irresponsible to go home and fire up your favourite FPS or something...

It would be quite funny if it wasn't also sad how taboo and frowned upon the whole thing is in adult society even to this day, when these adults will happily waste their time on other often less productive activities.

It should only be acceptable to say that games are a waste of time if you also do none of the above activities and in that case I applaud your mental strength to live with high principles in this modern world and devote your life to increasing skill within a talent (ie being a professional musician or being an professional athlete, etc).

Basically 'down time' Having a busy job and a family gives me little time to game, at best 4 hours/week. I started with an acorn electron and basically go through cycles of gaming for a few ears and then doing something more lroductiv for a few years. I don't watch (any) tv though, don't have an aerial or a license but do watch the odd film on Netflix but we're literally talking about one. A fortnight.

Because I like burning heretical scum out of existence in big spaceships fitted with many lasers. :)

They are fun, challenging and rewarding.

Also I was 3 when my dad first lifted me up to press the fire button on his game of space invaders. We also had a pinball machine in the garage when I was little, so I've never known anything else.

It's mainly my winter hobby as Mountain biking in winter is a cold, miserable experience even with warm gear and I'm sick of cleaning the filth off my Mountain bike.
Same goes for my motorbike, winter commuting means I don't really fancy going out on a pleasure ride.

So it's gaming, watching films etc during winter and the daily reptile/snake cleaning. Plus work related garbage that may need doing.

I must admit, whilst gameplay is still important, these days I thoroughly enjoy the graphics and most especially the sound fidelity in many AAA games. Usually a poor game doesn't tend to have strong focus on either of these two, but games like BF1 are stunning to look at, play and the gun sounds and general ambient audio is superb through good speakers/headphones and adds immersion that would otherwise be missing from the gameplay.

So for me, it's the whole package, not just gameplay.

That's a good point. I appreciate the art of games like TW3 and BF1 just as much as the actual game play.
