Why do you train? [gym rats thread]

I have to say that I don't do it predominantly for the sexual chase, I'd like to think it makes me more attractive or certainly desirable, but I'm doing it predominantly for me believe it or not. :)

You expect me to believe that "doing it for me" BS when earlier in the same sentence you say you think it makes you more attractive and desirable. More attractive and desirable to who?;)

After seeing your deadlift video I can totally believe that. Obviously if there were a bunch of women around you while you were doing that sort of thing, then one could argue you were showing off, but we know that wasnt the case.

Now, if all you ever did was chest, biceps and abs, then one would suspect that you were doing it for the ladies.

Doing it for the sex isn't as obvious as standing round flexing like a carnival strongman......sorry FF that sounds a bit like i'm saying you belong in a carnival. You do belong there but as the "Wolf Boy" not the strongman :p

Find someone on your Facebook with the "Daily Hunks" application installed to see what some women look at everyday

And no MTA, bicep boys arnt sneaking past me, my british accent, incredible looks and ravishing physique all draw them to me like a scrap car to that big ole magnet :D:cool::cool:

:D

I admit if it makes me more attractive then it's great - but it's not going to change my facial looks is it? :) However, I started lifting weights whilst in a relationship, and I'm not interested in the stereotypical abz 'n' bicepz look as we all agree. I like doing my power exercises, and I like to build strength as well as size. For me size and strength are equally as important.

I can honestly say I am doing it for me. I have pretty low self esteem about myself despite being confident and successful in a professional environment (i.,e. at work) I don't think much of myself at all. So for me the gym is some form of escapism and betterment of who I am. Something to hide behind maybe, I don't know. I just enjoy the buzz from there. There are no women at my gym except on the 2nd floor in the fitness studios - which I seldom ever go to.

Whenever I've been in a relationship they've always like my physique so of course it's a boost to the confidence and to the reasoning behind continuing with it. However even meeting up with exs they also comment on how I'm looking "big" in a way that is a good thing and it's of course undeniably a good feeling.

However, I've seen what I can achieve and I've seen myself develop so much over the past year and it's addictive. I'm after wanting to better myself - always. If in the past year I had started to get flooded with attention from the opposite sex then of course I'd be of the mind set that it's all thanks to the gym - but this is frankly not the case, and I don't care because I'm relatively happy in my skin bar my self esteem issues, I've got a good career, good group of friends and am in brilliant health.

No, ultimately I'm doing it for me I'm afraid. :)

11 weeks in to my cut and I've dropped from 17st 1lb (239lbs) down to 15st 10lbs (220lbs). The original plan was to drop down to 15st 1/2 but I think that'll be easy so the new target is 15st. If I achieve that I'll be the lightest I've been for nearly 2 1/2 years.

My diet's still not great but I'm dropping a bit of the crap each week. Last week it was just Nesquik and this week it'll just be concentrated orange juice. I'll happily drink plain old water if it means losing a few more unnecessary calories.

Will hopefully get some more pics up soon.

Ive gotta disagree with you on this one FF.

When people are leaner (leaning out - shedding bodyfat, getting ripped), their face will also look leaner and better/worse. Similarly, when bulking up their face will look fuller/fatter/fleshier.

So, your training and the amount you are eating (your physical state) can dictate what your face looks like, for better or for worse.

Myself, I prefer a leaner face, hence, when leaning out, my face looks better than when I'm bulking, when it looks rounder.

But anyway, all this talk of "looks" is detracting from what is a bodybuilding thread where men can be men and worry only about building muscle and nothing else.

I'm sure there are some women who go for the big/bald look. Just as there are some men who go for women who are not classically beautiful.

For Fight Club, Brad Pitt wouldve done a lot of work to get so lean. Remember, it isnt just the big/muscular guys who spend time working out. The thin, lean guys also spend time working out. In fact, I spend a lot more time in the gym when I'm leaning out than when buildling up.

some... no, lots. seriously. unless you have an attitude to go with it that is (which i dont :D )

Yes Pitt would have done a lot of work, im not saying he didnt, however, its a different type of hard work to building muscle.

I was being self deprecating - i.e. if you're an ugly **** it won't change that fact! :p

Are you happy you made the move to the USA?
Do you ever wish you could move back to the UK?

Definitely MUCH happier. Nothing at all that I can find thats bad about the US and where I live. Only thing I miss is bacon. I would never ever move back the UK except to somewhere like Docklands. But still no I would never move back.

Im in Eltham at the moment visiting an uncle at St Marys hospital. Speaking of which, Did I just see Robert on the high street near there?

Now I'm jealous.
I've heard a lot of positive things said about the USA, compared to the UK. Especially when you consider how expensive London is and what you get for your money.
Getting a Green Card is not easy.

I presume you moved with your parents, so didnt have to worry about Green Cards and the like?

Yeah I went with a green card, Ill have citizen in a year and a half so its all good.

I find living in the US is just SO much nicer,

Bigger houses
Cheaper cars
Cheaper food
Lower/no tax
Cheaper gas
Nicer roads
Everything is bigger
Nice scenary
Nice atmosphere
Nice girls
Nice girls
Nice people
Nice girls
Cheap protein cough 7lb tub of muscle milk for $30

Everything is just better.

Since there is all this talk of working out purely because of the opposite sex I have a question:

I admit, that 75% of the reason I work out is because of that (i.e. vain/want to look good etc., ultimately to look good to girls).

The gym I currently attend is a run-down place owned by asians. This is the kind of gym where they play arabic hymns and the toilet is something you really don't want to ever use... fair enough it's cheap at £20 a month and it has all the facilities (free weights/machines/etc) but I'm really considering joining a proper gym such as Greens...

My main motivation for doing that would be because it is unisex (:D) and just having those pretty faces would definitely give me a higher drive to attend the gym more often/physically try harder etc... The only downside with that is that it will probably cost twice as much and is not as local as the first gym (say another 2 miles travelling).

Do you think its worth it? :p

Edit: I'm asian too, & I'm just trying to set the scene before anyone jumps the gun :o

This is true. Deep down, everyone knows that :)
Disagree. I wouldn't pile on 1 & 1/2 stone or more throughout the winter months if I wanted to look good for the girls. I do it solely for strength and to better my lift PBs. The only reason I'm cutting now is so I don't end up a 40 stone monster in 10 or so years time :p
