Why do you train? [gym rats thread]

It would probably do me the world of favours to have some good looking bulk about me....
It would take the emphasis off my face anyway. ;)

Sunama, you keep using FF deadlift vid as an example of him not doing it for the women but its not the *actual* training that impresses the chicks its the results, the mass, the definition.

Doing sets of 1 rep, isnt going to get you definition.
Even for mass, it is recommended that you do more than 1 rep sets.

1 rep gives you the POWAH!!!

If you want (pulling) results, like I said, plastic surgery, hair replacement (if balding), hair dressing (to make your hair look good), the right clothing (to make you look good) and hanging around the night clubs/pubs to pull the women, will get you far better results than doing 1 rep, power lifts.

You have to understand that many people do training for many reasons. It was suggested earlier in this thread that any gym work is for sexual reasons. This is simply not the case.

Nope. Bodybuilding is about building as much muscle as possible, in the first instance. Once you have packed on enough, you fine tuning your body and looking for weak areas and symmetry.

Which is exactly the same as improving your appearance ;)

If you look at FreeFaller's deadlift vid, do you honestly believe that many, if any, women have seen it? Why on Earth would he bother?

I thought FF posted that for ppl to check out his form? and besides, as MTA said the gym is just the workshop, its the end results that are the important part in bodybuilding.

There are a lot of men and women out there who train hard for their own reasons (not involving sex). A lot of these people are happily married, with families and have no intention to attract a mate. Yet they train.

So you don't think that some men/women train to look great for their partners too then? I know i have always wanted to look good for my girlfriends when i strip off ;)

Bodybuilding is all about the flange mate :p

It isnt. Adding muscle to your body doesnt necessarily improve your appearance. Its subjective.

A HUGE Bill Goldberg type character might look good to you, but to most, a waif like Brad Pitt looks better.

Its subjective.

Yes. His form. Not to impress the ladies and get laid.

He stated that he was doing 1 rep sets. How are 1 rep sets going to build muscle? Usually people dont do 1 rep sets to build muscle. They do it to work on power. Now unless you go to a club/pub and perform power lifts to attract the ladies, I cant see how doing 1 rep sets, in the privacy of a gym, is going to attract the women.

They might. Many do. Nothing wrong with that. But they are not working out to get laid. If you are married, say, chances are you both love eachother and would love eachother whether each was fat, thin, lost a leg, lost an eye, etc. As part of that loving relationship you will regularly make love, irrespective of body shape.

Bodybuilding is all about the flange mate :p

I have no idea what flange is, so cant argue this point.

At the end of the day, people train for different reasons. It is obvious that a few of you here do so to get laid. Personally, if that is your aim, your time/money could be spent better to get a higher "hit" rate. However, what you do is your business and no one elses.

Thing is though chaps, not all ladies like muscles or big men. We have to remember that it's a diverse world out there and some people like some things and others don't. I have women friends who hate big muscles, they prefer skinny men, likewise I know some that like "big" chaps without necessarily being defined or built. I'm not denying a lot of them like a good looking body, but a lot of them don't like it when guys are "too big".

The vid I posted was for a) checking my form b) why the hell not post it I was happy with the lift c) share my achievements - 200kg+ DLs are something to be proud of d) show off :p

I still dont understand why some women dont like muscle. I can understand excessive muscle but I consider what I have necessary. I know for a fact mine likes the fact I'm big and that obviously it makes her feel safer. How anyone could want someone who weighs less then them is unbeknown to me

It is. I've never seen anyone who looks worse off for having more muscle. Bodybuilding is all about appearance. We're not talking powerlifting here.

Tbh, i find it baffling why some have a hard time admitting that they bodybuild to improve their appearance. Maybe they would't feel "hardcore" enough?. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

Punani :D

I never said I'm not doing it to improve my appearance, as stated I do have self esteem issues and I use the gym as an escape mechanism to make me feel better about myself. As a result, I'm bigger, stronger and feel a bit more confident in myself. Which as a result might help improve my appearance to the opposite sex - however I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm doing it for vanity's sake and for the fact I like to challenge myself and push myself. I can't do much about my looks, but I can improve my body shape, just like I can remove bodyhair. It's also to make me look tougher, and I like getting compliments from you chaps and my friends. It's more of a vain/selfish pursuit.

I won't deny of course that if it does make me more appealing to girls then it would be churlish to ignore it. However I'd consider this a bonus and not a sole reason.

Dont you just love walking down the street and watching people have a peak at your arms or another gym rat giving you the nod

It's like a secret club, where everyone can tell who's really a member and who's just a foney.

Wait...what? First you say it's all about sex/women, now you say it's all about apperance. They're two seperate things. Appearance I guess is part of it for me but it's not about women or sex, it's building self confidence and pride in myself.

Surely they really are the same thing? why do you want to change your appearance other than to make yourself more attractive to the opposite sex? I'm with Jeff and MTA on this one. there are plenty sports you can do that will get you as healthy and probably more cardiovascularly healthy so why do weights? It's either as part of a strength training for a particular sport or its to look better, and I'm sure the vast majority here do it to look better, either to attract someone if single or because you want to look good for your current partner. There ain't no shame in that.

If there were no women in the world, would you still aim for an adonis type phisique? Honestly?
If so, what would you do with your muscle? Touch it? Stroke it? Kiss it? Maybe give it a little lick now and then? Flex it in front of other guys while squeeling "chase me"?

It's really all about mans most basic instict...Flange :p

Isn't that what this whole thread is about? :p

Personally I'm a very long way from looking like Adonis but I enjoy the challenge of lifting heavier and heavier weights and seeing the gradual changes. If more women will find me attractive as a result then so much the better (any advantage you can get is a good one) but it is far from the sole reason.

Oh god dude, please just stop and accept that I don't do it for sex. I have no interest in sex or women whatsoever and I never have really. Stop acting like you know everyone and everything about them.

Like I said before bulding up muscle and getting into shape just gives me confidence and pride in myself and helps me be happy with who I am, which is a big part of finding inner peace and enjoying life. The sense of achievement and seeing actual results, getting better and better, that in turn motivates me further, not just in bodybuilding but as a person in general and therefore in other aspects of life. I enjoy the challenge and making progress, and that feeling you have after a good session of lifting well.

It's not what I 'do' with the muscle it's what the muscle (and the exercise) does for me.

Although I believe that can also work the other way and you get people with "small man syndrome" coming up to you trying to prove how hard they are.

It doesn't really matter to be honest. At most they will be 170lbs which quite frankly I could accidently bump into and send them flying.

Small people are not even a slightest hinderance to me. Im 220lbs odd and pushing 6'4.

That never happens to me :( And I have 17.5" arms! :(

SPW - I feel the same as you :)
