Just wondering if its normal for DU meter to show my connection contsantly downoading and uploading? if I hover my mouse over the icon in the tray it will say.. DL: 4.8 kb/s UL: 5.6 kb/s

Im not browsing or anything?

this will add up towards my monthly usage on Nildram and Im a bit worried about it.

Ive killed most of the suspicious services but its still showing a constant dl ad uploading going on.. is this normal??

Cant work it out, check this....

I didnt have any internet site open at all too.

"wscntfy.exe" is the Windows Security Center, introduced in Service Pack 2. It displays a tray icon indicating the status of updates, virus protection, and firewall.

ali1589.exe is for my raid manager.

Im using a wired connection to the router at the mo, but there is a wireless connection to my laptop, its turned off though at the mo.

This is really starting to alarm me now, take a look at the following screenshot...

Theres no way this can be right? its contantly going up and up too. I really need to stop whatever it is from downloading and uploading here.

I did a scan with spybot and it found trackers etc, I removed them but still my connection shows a constant dl/upload going on.

Thanks for your help, I'll try that. I have also changed the wep key incase somone had hacked it and was connecting to my wireless signal. Im really puzzled.

I have no idea what Im doing here but I looked in attached devices in my router and it says.. device name DESKTOP and an IP address thats not mine?

When I check my ip address its different?

reboot your router, and see if the device re-attaches when it comes back up...

how is your wireless network configured?

i think its about time you changed the ip range of your lan interface, potentially even using a custom subnet mask to limit the number of available ip addresses...

disable dhcp and use static addresses...

then make sure broadcast ssid is disabled...

change your ssid...

change your wep key and make sure it is the highest strength your router will support - probably 128 bit...

look at implementing wpa-psk...

enable mac filtering...

and then see if the person re-attaches! ;)

Thanks thats really helpfull advice, I will do what you say and report back soon. :)

is your laptops hostname 'desktop' ? and does it have the ip/mac address of the station attached to your router ?

No my laptop should be called just that laptop. And the laptops ip address is the same as the desktops.

I just changed my wep key to 128 bit and now it shows to things in the attached devices.. DESKTOP and LAPTOP.. both with simular ip addreses apart from they end in 02 and 03

Christ Im confused here?

Those ip addresess listed in there are only 8 numbers and my ip address is 10 numbers?

DUMeter will only show what's going in and out that machine.

The (lack of) security in WEP is an issue (use WPA if your kit will do it), but it's not particularly relevant to what DUMeter's reporting. Try disconnecting the internet connection and see if it continues, or try TCPView.

I have these options in the router...

Security Options
Disable
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
WPA-802.1x

IM currently using WEP.. can I use WPA? is it the same sort of thing?

Im assuming that you are using NAT, and that you internal IP's are 192.168.0.x or similar. If you run whatismyip with NAT enabled then yes you will see the same IP, as you only have a single public facing IP address.

Also, DUMeter will only record incoming and outgoing connections from YOUR pc, nothing to do with the Laptop.

Try running netstat -a in Start > Run > Type "cmd"
It will show you whats currently connecting and where to from your desktop.

Ok I did that and it just listed a load of desktops with the 192.168.0x ip addreses are these mine?? my machines ip address is different.

I just turned off my laptop and changed the key to wpa and the laptop 192.168.0xx has gone.

I think the ip listed there is the lanport..

Not the adsl port.. does this explain why its different??

Im sorry I told you I was a clueless at this. I still though am getting a download going on in du meter.
