whats this i hear about vista downgrading content such as divx/xvid movies and mp3s which it thinks are not legal....
what crap is that?

its exactly what you said, untruths and crap !

i hate vista because after 6 years in development they made vista with thousands of worthless and unnecessary features which cripple you system. it was made for 5 year old kids to play with and their stupid marketing campaign "wow" is not tempting me to buy it

I dont like that dx10 is only for vista forces u to upgrade regardless if u want to play new dx10 games. Why should M$ force all gamers to upgrade OS to play games that M$ did not even make?

Yeah... I mean why don't my games still work on Windows 3.X, damn MS for using technology to advance the industry and make us upgrade! We should still be using DOS so that NO-ONE should ever have to upgrade!

It's called progress, DX10 is radically different and will spawn a new generation of games. Do you expect technology to stay still forever and never have to upgrade?

"Vista will regard your system as new if you install a new piece of hardware at ITS discretion.

Some rumours say it has to be a new motherboard, others that it need only be a new mouse or keyboard - perhaps even whenever the "new hardware found" wizard boots up.

if you believe that then you must have no common sense. Whatsoever.

Plus M$ is just trying to entrench themselves into a deeper more far reaching monopoly.

It's only a monopoly because they're the only one that can product a fully-featured stable and compatible OS for mainstream use.

I agree that the price is ridiculous and prohibitive though, another example of how we get ripped off in this country.

It amuses me when people say they love Vista because of the gadgets as well. Do they not know that you can do all of that in XP very easily and with little resources, eg. Yahoo widgets.

You can emulate Aero with Windowblinds, even the taskbar thumbnails which are a pointless gimmick anyway - as is Flip3D.

Richdog, buying vista for dx10 since new games will only run with dx10 is blackmail. A game which cost £30 could cost £240 now. Think direct x, open-gl, glide these are all API (application programming interfaces), this is all that is necessary to play the latest games. XP can (and will I dont doubt) be running dx10.

South-East trains have a monopoly on the trains carrying people into London from Kent, but they are still subject to the law and various watchdog bodies who will step in if they overstep the mark.

The main reason for me is that vista works as good as xp....for me anyway.

Plus when i install it i dont have to wait for 100's :p windows updates to download and almost an hour for them to install. XP is old, past it and a has been OS. It should have had an SP3 a long time ago.

Yeah i could make it look like vista but i would need a dozen programs running in the taskbar munching my memory to do it. Seems acceptable in XP however, as soon as vista uses system memory there is uproar lol

Vista is the future, it works, it works well, its the only viable OS on the PC that does everything. Deal with it

Doesn't XP work as well as XP?

Please explain to me how it is 'past it'; what exactly can I not do in XP that I can do in Vista? I'm managing to use the web right now in XP - it's very impressive how this 'past it' OS can let me do that isn't it.

Not at all :)

How is it the 'only viable OS on the PC'? How are Windows 2000, XP and 2003 not viable exactly?

I does after 2 service pack and even more updates,
Imagine trying to install it from an origianl OEM copy bought when it came out, Nightmare

Of couse they work yeah, but not if you want to play DX10 games, not viable

I think the only time you can truely say this is when MS stop supporting it because it has come to the end of its life cycle ;)

Some interesting points raised. Some valid, others misguided and some absolute BS.

I too have been guilty of all three in the past. You get sucked into the Vista Hate scene. You start hearing half-truths and believing them.

After purchasing a couple of manuals for Vista I can safely say that the actual depth of the changes in the OS is considerable. I thought I knew what it was capable of, but in the end it turned out I was just stuck in XP mentality.

I cannot stand going back to XP to play games. The UI is slow. You can certainly tell that it is being created by the CPU and not the GPU. Vista Windows Explorer is far better than XP Windows Explorer. (I used to use Directory Opus because Windows Explorer was so rubbish)

The Snap In's on Vista MMC offer far greater flexibility than they ever did on XP. So I cannot understand why people are saying its aimed at 5 year olds. It certainly isn't, but then I get the feeling the people who are making those types of comments have only been skimming the surface of what Vista is capable of.

Photo Gallery, DVD playback, and DVD authoring software were long overdue. OSX provides them, as does Linux, so why all the criticism at MS for providing them. I imagine it's just bitter linux and OSX users that no longer have anything to boast about.

Linux is no where near ready for the average mum and dad. It will always remain the realms of geeks, because the geeks want it that way. How could they brag about their wisdom if everyone was using it. No, they would find some other obscure OS and then condemn Linux users for being noobs.

Its the same with OSX users. They like the fact that only a few people use it. It gives them prestige and bragging rights about how cool and hip they are. I have a Mac as a 2nd machine and sometimes its shameful the evangelism and arrogance that your hear mac users spout.

Likewise with Vista. It has its problems and its fanboys too. I read one post where the author said the most important thing is configuring every application exactly how he wants, not gaming, not productivity, but customising his applications is more important to him then his applications himself.

My biggest gripe about Vista is the cost. It's too expensive for what it is, especially today as most households have more than one PC. And I think that is reason why people hate vista. OSX offers multiple licenses. Linux is free. MS should look into this, its ripping people off.

No I'd agree in many ways

XP would be a lot more attractive once again in my eyes if they pulled their finger out and released service pack 3

Unfortunately I fully expect even Vista to get its first service pack before XP gets it's third which takes the ****

i like vista, but it doesnt support my games so im switching back to xp. maybe when i upgrade too ill change to vista.

Download XP SP2 and burn it to disc, or get it from Microsoft on a CD, problem solved. I don't know about you but I don't reinstall Windows very often as there is no need to. When I do, Norton Ghost = a fully running XP SP2 with latest patches, installed in about 10 minutes.

How many DX10 games are you going to play today? :p But you agree then that for those of us who are not big gamers (or gamers at all) that XP is perfectly good enough?

lah de daaa

the point im makin in not everyone know how to make an SP2 disk or mess around with ghost (lol norton), And joe blogs is going to be told, Forget XP, Buy vista you dont need to worry about any SPs or updates yet.

And yes XP is good enough for non gamers, but why pay for that when you can use PCLos (linux) for free

DX10 is coming like it or not its not gonna be on XP. so Vista is the only solution to play games at highest detail
