Why does my CPU speed drop?

i had temp problems with my 4.0 bundle from ocuk but we solved it after a week or so going back and forth using customer forum. we discovered it was an airflow issue with the case, cost me £20 to fix and bam - stable as a rock.

just start the ball rolling with OCUK and you'll be up and running properly soon enough.

Alright guys cheers for all the replies!

I posted in the customer service forum and got a reply pretty promptly! Basically they asked me what the rest of my system was and if i'm using the stock cooler or not (I am indeed using the stock cooler because i was under the impression that i was getting some thermal paste! o.0) I dont know whether to keep it though, the fact that my pc loads up fine but doesn't POST at all... Is really unsettling...

I thought with a bundle you usually get a cooler? Im sure I looked at a bundle and it had a cooler but you could pay about £20 more and get an H50 or something. Either way, its bad that it wasnt tested running at 4ghz before it was sold. Very off putting...

If however, it was a bundle that didnt come with paste (which i thought they do) then it should have had a big warning on the bundle packaging that you require paste.

One of my mates got a cooler many years ago and scraped the 'gooey stuff' off then put it on the cpu and wondered why it didnt work. lol

Re speedstep and BSOD.

I had very occasional BSOD with the speedstep on. I have turned speedtest off and the computer has been solid since.

I really hate to say this, and I don't mean to aim this specifically at the OP, but this is what happens when you sell equipment that requires a reasonable level of enthusiast knowledge to those who don't have it.

But they sell it to everyone so everyone can enjoy the extra speed & they charge extra so it all should be working out of the box.....its the same as if you buy a GPU thats been factory OC you would expect it to work at that speed & not have to mess around with settings & coolers your self

Well even if they sold it to someone who was an enthusiast wouldn't they be ****ed knowing they'd paid a premium for something that wasn't stable? Even if they could make it stable themselves?

The overclocking kits should have come with a tube of thermal paste.
Try running OCCT, it stresses the system AND shows the temps while its doing it.

As very openly mentioned in the description for the OC'd bundles a good quality, stable power supply is a must for the OC to work. And as all experienced overclockers know there often isn't much logic in what does and doesn't work well together, sometimes its just luck of the draw.

I bought an OC'd i920 bundle which had definately been tested and run up as there were signs of TIM on the cpu socket, and yes mine did come with a tube of AS5 tim. And on mine the overclock was pretty conservative. 4Ghz on 1.325v which I'm now running prime stable at 4.2Ghz with 1.3v.

Talk to OCUK, they are pretty good at sorting this stuff out, just because they have run the system up and got a stable overclock, it doesn't necessarily mean that with your hardware it will also be stable. It may be that your power supply isn't giving out a stable enough voltage or something.

I find it a little excessive when people moan about this stuff without giving the seller the opportunity to put it right first. If they don't sort it out one way or another after you've talked to them, then give them hell!

All overclocked bundles are sent out after completing OCCT and Prime 95 stability tests. Heatsinks are not mounted due the size and weight of them, TIM is provided and a BIOS profile is saved in case settings are lost. A sufficient power supply is highly recommended (600W+ in your case).

It seems that your bundle is no longer working correctly and you can webnote in, ring us or start a thread in the customer support forum for us to answer you quickly.

We can arrange a collection for you and we will get the bundle repaired if that is what you wish to do.

this is a very good point and something that needs to be highlighted.
with overclocked bundles we have to account for user error as well as poor quality hardware matches.
there have been numerous occasions where i have seen people put 4.2GHz rampage extreme i7 bundles into £15 cases with no airflow and wonder why they are getting high temps, as well as using 400w jeantech PSUs to run a power hungry amd phenom II with crossfire 5870 cards.

whilst this stuff sounds crazy there is only so much we can do to hold someones hands through a system build without building it ourselves.
i think OcUK support at the moment does a good job of ensuring we get to the bottom of problems like this quickly and with minimal fuss for the customer
obviously we use the experience to improve the products and the support as we go

They didn't even put any thermal paste on my cpu =( so i had to use the stock cooler for the i7 =P instead of the fenrir o.0

i get the impression from reading this thread...

1. you are using a stock cooler on a 4ghz overclock
2. you expected us to preinstall your thermal paste

can you clarify if you are using the stock cooler at the overclock settings?
this is an exceptionally bad idea

thermal paste is goopy and horrible, it would be smeared all over every capacitor of your motherboard if we were to install it before it shipped.
this would cause it to short out the board.

i think i have already picked this up in customer support but if i havent then just post in there, myself and my team will be able to assist you and see what is causing the problems you are expreriencing :)

Stock cooler on a 4ghz overclock would have been why the bundle was throttling to keep the temps down.

Hopefully you haven't damaged anything.

Maybe it would be useful for OCuK to include a piece of paper with installation / information guide in relation to cpu cooling, power supply, cabling, case choice and mounting. Hopefully that would cut the amount of user error involved and work-load for the support staff. Never have brought a bundle from OCuK, just thought it would be a good idea and quick and easy to nock up.

Good luck getting it fixed bud, should be an ace system once its up and working / built correctly.

we included a care pack for many months,

and it turned out that nobody ever read it

so we still had to repeat the same three points

1. speedstep is ok, it saves you power...
2. windows system properties dont read overclocks, you need cpuz...
3. dont flash your bios if your pc is working fine...

stuff that to most enthusiasts is common sense, but to people who are new to hardware it can be daunting.

most people like to ask to make sure anyway, regardless of what a care pack says

personally i can see why, when i buy anything expensive i like to see support for it as part of the investment. so getting a helpful tech on the end of an email/phone is more important than an instruction manual that everyone throws away

1. Yes i am using the stock cooler on my CPU because no thermal paste was included in my bundle... So i had to really =/
2. Yes i did, but now that's not what's bothering me, I'm more annoyed about the fact that I dont have any thermal paste now o.0

You have picked it up in the customer support but I've made 2 posts with no reply! =D

"For you own interest, it’s a not a good idea to post any OcUK shop queries relating to pre or post orders, returns and technical queries. Please be aware that shop staff do not browse the forum looking for customer enquiries and your correspondence may be missed."

The forums are not for customers support queries, since you paid the premium OCuK are the guys to help you.

Fair play they should have sent you out some thermal paste with the bundle but again that's for you to take up with them.

Also are you sure there is not any thermal paste included with your cooler, some heat-sinks I've brought come with some.

I got told to post there ^^ I do have some replies on it already though! =D

I'll try and get it sorted tomorrow i suppose, i'm leaning to having it sent back though =(

Don't get it sent back, get some thermal paste from them and put on your proper heatsink and enjoy your i7 beast, unless something is broken it will be fine and you won't have to wait ages.
