Take a pet's need to be fed and taken outside every few hours, for instance. That responsibility gives pet owners purpose and makes them feel needed, improving their senses of self worth. It also forces them to get off the couch and go for a walk every now and then, boosting both health and happiness.

Besides the behavioral changes, studies also show that interacting with a pet helps to reduce levels of harmful neurochemicals in the body and raise the good ones.

So is Fido a dog or a furry-coated Prozac?

read through the above and understand how sad you must be to own a dog, it improves your self worth, etc. its basically filling a void in your life which you failed to get through normal channels.

And while it's usually the four-legged furries that get all the credit, other pets can help, too. Simply watching a fish tank versus a bare wall for 30 minutes lowers blood pressure significantly [source: Duncan]. Observing an aquarium can be an even more powerful relaxant than several proven meditative techniques [source: Lynch].

basically means sad people with no lives should get a dog to be happier, people who have lives and friends have no need to get one.

Whoever coined the saying "good friends are hard to find" probably didn't have a pet.

yeah no **** sherlock, thats because they had good friends and didnt need a pet to fill that "gap" in their lives.

Fido's soulful eyes, you're not alone. A study on the bonds between people and their animals revealed that 97 percent of pet owners talk to their pets

really the need to talk to something which doesnt understand a word your saying? this proves dog owners are socially inept.

Not only can pets be an integral member of a person's social network, but they can help extend that network.

proves my theory yet again. when a pet beceoms an integral part of your social network, thats when you have to realise your socially awkward.

The companionship pets offer can be especially beneficial to the elderly or the infirm, who often have trouble maintaining lasting friendships. The presence of a pet provides a constant source of healthy social stimulation that can be hard to find in even a spouse or a caretaker.

so basically if you cannot find a good wife or friend, get a dog.

You really are one weird little man. I mean, genuinely weird.

Sonny, I think you've got issues buddy. Not the people who like having pets as companions.

You seem to be trying to alienate the majority of people on this thread for liking or wanting a pet and the only conclusion I can come to is that you are insecure about yourself for some reason. You seem intent on making everyone else look "inferior" and "needy" just because they like to keep pets, but why do you feel the need to do so so adamently? A person who is truly content with themselves and their own wellbeing surely wouldn't try to nit pick at the flaws in other peoples behaviour.

Of course I could be completely wrong and you could own several pets and you're just trying to highlight to everyone else at the same time that they are 'needy' as well. But I'm going to assume for now you don't own a dog.

I wouldn't mind a dog.... had them as a kid... but until im in a suitable position to look after it i don't think so.... also they really tie you down too much.

Also of all the dogs on earth i dont think id get a pug :O lol
