Why don't Microsoft add more resolutions for LCD monitors?

A lot of people run their Xbox 360 through their LCD monitors, myself included.

The only problem is that the 360 doesn't support the optimum resolutions for LCD monitors. Most are 1680x1050, or higher. The 360 doesn't support any of these, so I have to put up with 1280x768. The games themselves still look very good, clear...etc, but text...etc looks slightly blurred.

It would be nice to be able to run my 360 at optimum resolution, why don't Microsoft add support for these resolutions? Is there any reason? (Eg. Technical limitations...etc?)

I have the same problem and was holding out for more supported resolutions. But I am fed up waiting and have decided to get a 26" samsung LCD instead.

Afaik, all that it would need is MS to add those resolutions to the ones that can be selected, just like a PC  , the problem is the UI might not support those resolutions and render it incorrectly.

I think you have partially given the reason right here, limiting the number of resolutions to LCD HDTV's helps to boost their sales so customers can "fully" experience their games.

I've been thinking this since the very begining...

1680x1050 and 1920x1200 would be nice, at the very least.

When I have read developers interviews etc. They always moan about having to accomadate the amount of resolutions that are around now.. Never mind the full range that could be used.

What have Microsoft got to gain by potentially increasing sales in HDTV's? They don't manufacture HDTV's do they?

Unless they have some kind of deal with HDTV manufacturers I can't see how they would benefit from limiting the 360 to HDTV resolutions.

I think a lot more people play it on a normal SDTV or a HDTV than an LCD Monitor so I guess they just want to make it a standard and provide less hassle when setting up.

Isn't it down to video memory / processing ?? , 1280 x 768 uses a lot less memory / processing than 1680 x 1050 .

**Disclaimer **

I've not got a 360 so I'm guessing :D

The extra work introduced for developers is not worth the small percent of people who want to play on monitors rather than TVs.

There shouldn't be hardly any extra work..As the xbox360 just scales the image up & down to different res...

Surely it can't be that hard for microsoft to add 1680x1050 & 1920x1200

Eh well, guess I'll just stick with it and hope for added resolutions in the future. I'm not about to splash out on a decent HDTV for slightly better image quality.

surely the image could be a scaled 16:9 image with forced black bars to maintain aspect ratio? Would you guys prefer that to a stretched image? (assuming your monitor stretches the image)

it outputs bigger than 1680x1050 when doing it to a tv though

I dont see why they cant add support for 16:10 ratio screens like lcd monitors. To keep the HDTV 16:9 ratio all they would have to do is add small black borders top and bottom so it wouldnt seem stretched. a lot of the games also work in non-widescreen modes (4:3 & 5:4), so why they dont support 16:10 is a mystery to me. It wouldnt take a lot of work.

My 17" TFT has a native res of 1280x768, so I'm happy. : )

Although I understand it's stretching the image a bit from 16:9, but only 48 pixels worth.
