Why England fails all the time

I think for 2010 qualifiers I would field this:

---------------------------Hart------------------------------

Richards -------------- Dawson ----- Ferdinand (C) ---------- A.Cole

-----------------------Barry------- Hargreaves (Is he still alive?)

Milner ------------------- Gerrard---------------------- A. Johnson

-------------------------------Rooney------------------------

Squad players:

GK: Foster, Green

Defenders: Johnson, Mancienne, Cahill, Warnock

Midfield: Muamba, Wiltshire, Rodwell, Huddlestone, Lampard

Strikers: Defoe, Agbonlahor, Walcott, Crouch

Ones to watch:

Jones at Blackburn, Gibbs + Lansbury at Aresenal,
Jonjo Shelvey, Delph, James Vaughan, Dan Gosling...

Haha. So 24 year old Rooney is dropped, while Ashley Cole who generally had a solid world cup is dropped? A Barry back from injury gets dropped due to one bad performance amongst very other very bad performances? Why are Johnson's awful performances excused? He was arguably the worst England player of the world cup.

Play that above team and England will struggle to qualify.

Unless I misunderstood the meaning of the word "future" I don't think they are saying 'this is the team we should play in our upcoming qualifiers', more a case of 'This is what we might be fielding in the future', say in Euro2016.

our other best players in the past have played abroad with the exception of shearer

Adams, Seaman, Ferdinand, Cole, Neville, Shilton, Pearce, Robson etc etc.... loads of our better players never played abroad, and I'm only going back to 1990 here.

^@Oxy: Not sure about that, relying on Rio and Hargreaves seems a bit of a gamble given their woeful fitness record of late. Micah Richards can't get in his club side half the time (he started less than 20 league games last season) and when he does it's not always at fullback. Walcott similarly, a bench player who invariably plays wide right for his club, not as a striker. His lack of composure is likely to get exposed at the top level too.

Personally I'd like to see Kirkland looked at if he can prove his fitness, not necessarily as a starter but I'd take him over Green in the squad based on ability.

What we need to stop doing is treating our players like they're Gods of the game. Their reputations and skills get hyped up to a ridiculous level and then we act all shocked when England fail to perform.

Also, the tactic of playing the long ball is not helping. More emphasis needs to be focused on passing the ball around, probing opposition defence until you find a break. Look at teams like Germany and Spain. They employ that tactic and work better as a team.
