Why GPU prices are NOT likely to drop significantly EVER!

I was very young then I dropped out of uni. Father was quite disappointed as mostly everyone in our family/relatives have a LOT of letters after their name,
and are well paid but I wouldn't even have a BSc!
Stayed with parents, so no bills to pay and started my trading career. Fast forward some years and suddenly I had made more than everybody with profits
still going up and up, parents/relatives were suddenly all proud of me! Nowadays if family want anything I buy it for them without a second thought because I can afford it. :)

NO beans on toast, my parents were well off.

Why have you only got a 3700x and a mid range GPU then?

Why not a 5950x and a 3090 for the lulz?

I monitor social media and this week have seen plenty of 3070's sold for around £650 second hand, which shocks me considering you can buy a brand new 3070Ti for £750. So though the values are down I feel £650 is still strong money for a second hand 3070, even £550 would be decent, I've never known a market where second hand items fetch close to current new price, second hand GPU's would always typically be around half price of new and I am not seeing any 3070's for as low as £350-400.

Used car market says hello :D

Well I am very happy with used car market, all my cars have appreciated, made a few grand on the Honda which I sold recently always a nice surprise to own a car, enjoy it and then sell it for more than it cost. :)

GPU market is now calming down, used cards don't fetch more than new any more or certainly should not as demand has eased allowing supply to catch up a little.

Social media and auctions have always been weird with second hand hardware as people seem to be happy paying as much or more than new or as much as the next level up in the product stack. Example item A for sale buy it now for £200 same item B people get into a bidding war and continue to bid on item B above item A £200.

I'm seeing more and more mining rigs being broken down on social media though with the same excuse of moving house/job and there's loads of founders edition cards/AMD 6xxx/Nvidia 3xxx online with 100's knocked of them but they still too expensive not selling.

Seeing plenty of retailers having stock now don't seem to shifting like they once did and prices gradually dropping , guess it was always gonna happen with more saturation

Also seeing more rigs or cards from rigs for sale reason for sale moving overseas moving for job etc yeah ok ;)

Yeah we have had the latest gen out for well over a year now, this has meant most people likely have a card and those that are not desperate will be eying up 40 series and 7000 series which is only months away.

Most common script I'm seeing is: "Brand new! Never used! ..box opened."

Amazing how many people seem to buy a GPU just for the unboxing part. :D

Oh I didn't realise that petrol and food was scalped due to mining. Hopefully the price of food and petrol will come down after June when ETH 2.0 releases.

Agree that when the crypto chain letter scheme busts (and it will) GPUs will drop price a bit, but I have a big bet on inflation going to 2030 and believe even with miners gone GPUs prices will stay high.

Well, if you want to go with that argument then

Only broken GPUS go in the bin, still got my 1060/4770k and turn it on from time to time, 720p/1080p gaming is not that bad even today.
Yep quite right inflation goes at different rates in different markets, right now I believe we have a bit of a currency collapse going up to 2030.

Waiting on the 7000/4000 series to see if MS will deliver on the improved RT.
I hardly ever splurge on myself unless I really want something, 3000/6000 series underwhelming as was directx12u. I like to spend on family/parents more and leave as much as possible to the kids when I'm gone.

The retailers have seen they can charge people in some instances 100% above MSRP so retailers will be a big reason prices of cards from now on will not go down, There's a reason the boys at the top of these stores all drive expensive cars and go on holidays a lot.

People paid those silly prices due to necessity, greed or thinking they can recover part of the silly money or even earn from the card through mining when not gaming.

It was all about the mining.

Prices are coming down all the time. The 6600 for example is now down to £359.99 at OCUK. That's just 20% above MSRP. In a month or two it should be even less.

This is why I tend to only shop at OCUK, Some other stores that shall not be named were charging £300+ for the same GPU I was looking at not so long ago, Even down to more standard things like the PSU I was looking at was £50 extra, No thank you, OCUK only for my PC needs :D
