Why i am done with Seagate for the last time

One final point: at the end of the “What Drives Should You Buy” post, Beach discussed what Backblaze is buying today. Right now, their most favoured drive is the ... wait for it ... Seagate 4TB Barracuda – even though it supposedly is less reliable than the WD or Hitachi drives. Huh?

Well price talks apparently.

Nothing will EVER convince me to get a Seagate drive again, even if it was £20 for 5tb.
So far for January to March:

So called 'enterprise' 5tb Constellations :

Of 20 we have, 10 in each nas, 7 (4 and 3) have died, all developed bad sectors, of the replacements, 4 failed rebuild and developed bad sectors, so call that 11.

5Tb freeagent or whatever it is, we have 9, 4 have died of bad sectors, none have been dropped or mishandled.

We have 2 small 4 bay Qnap nas with 3tb Seagate drives just for backing up the music departments projects, bad sectors in 3 drives, 2 and 1.

We mostly use WD reds and WD RE drives, of 30, one has developed a single bad sector in January and nothing since. i am expecting the Seagates to die off and thats it for them, gonna replace any personal dead Seagate with another brand, why we buy them over and over i do not know, guess its the price but i've complained for years about it and finally they're listening to me, WD from now on.

In my experience Seagate drives have all died early deaths, compared to WD drives, of which many of mine are still going strong, many years later.

WD/HGST all the way.

The original 1.5TB drives put me off Seagate for life. 125% failure rate .

Currently have Samsung and WD disks, all solid for the past few years.

I point blank refuse to use Seagate's harddrives that are more like spinning rust. Western Digital are okay, but Hitachi/Toshiba every time for me. As well as my backup drives, the only harddrives in my use are all Hitachi/Toshiba.

Over time, when 1TB SSD drives are cheaper, I will most likely replace my 2TB harddrive with an SSD when it starts to either fail or just become too old for my liking.

My last Hitachi drive, which I now use as one of my backup drives, had about 6 years of spinup time on it's clock and not a single problem with it. I just start to lose my trust in harddrives older than 5 years.

I have always used Western Digital drives and never had one die on me! I refuse to use anything else but YMMV.

Got an old Seagate 250GB HDD with 5 years power-on time, it's probably about 10 years old. Was used as OS drive for 6-7 years, now used as a little backup drive.

In the past three years have bought six more Seagate drives (Barracuda 1TB/2TB), used as non-OS drives.

No issues so far.

Did buy one of those new-ish Toshiba P300 1TB recently and read/write performance really was good for the price. So may stick with purchasing those for now. Reliable? We'll see.

My dad's Western Digital 500GB drive (Blue, I think) failed within two years, although to be fair it was a laptop drive, inside a laptop, so a lot more heat, and just luck of the draw really.

Same here I had Seagate drives in my Main PC & HTTP & skyHD boxes for years with no issues so far

Have no idea what the OP doing to his Seagate drives

As someone who repaires enterprise servers and storage, the majority of drives I replace are all Seagate as they are the most commonly used.

EMC have had an issue with Seagates in their Data Domain storage recently resulting in mass swapouts occuring.

I have had better reliability experience overall with WD but what is the clincher for me is WD's good customer support and advanced replacement scheme.
In my experience their phone call support has been excellent and the whole process of returns / replacement is pretty quick and I am kept informed throughout.
They recently replaced my 6TB Red without the need to send it back.

I have dealt with Seagate's returns a number of times in the past and found it quite troublesome. The same applied when I have needed to return Samsung drives.

Perhaps my experience might now be different with Seagate but I have continued to have good results with WD so I stick with what I am happy with.

I would disagree I've had 3 seagate drives all still going strong. I tried a WD green which didn't work and had to be replaced. And then a WD black which sounded like a 2 stroke chainsaw.

I don't mind either brand. But seagate have been fine for me. One of my 2TB barracudas is about 4 years old.

Seagate get a lot of bad press for drives being rubbish, they are also the more commonly used due to price. Still wondering why we hear about so many seagates going bad?

I personally have about 10 in use currently and have only had 1 fail me.

I have 3 seagates and all are still working fine although two have been replaced due to need for extra storage capacity.

I have only ever had two HDD failures since 1998. Ibm deskstar 22GB out of box failure and a Maxtor diamondmax plus9 that failed after a couple of years.

Seems to go in Cycles. I remember when Seagate was top dog and WD was brutal. Now its the other way around.

Aye, I remember when Maxtor drives were the spawn of satan and Seagate were the ones to go for, I had a number of Maxtor drives and everyone thought I was mad, then when Maxtor disappeared Seagate seemed to take on the mantle of convenient scapegoat.

I expect that when Seagate are gone everyone will say WD drives are rubbish and will praise Samsung to the hilt.
